      Welcome to the Marine Institute. The Marine Institute or MI as we like to refer to it, is a student-focused school.  We believe that students need our support in order to succeed.

      The Mandate of the Marine Institute is to provide education and training, applied research and technology transfer in support of our client industries on a national and international basis. Overall, the Marine Institute is committed to providing a learning environment in which students can reach their full potential. We aim to design and deliver programs that provide graduates with highly competitive skills and abilities. We encourage excellence in teaching and learning, and seek to provide the industrial community with relevant, high quality, applied research and technology transfer.

      Our mission is To foster economic development in strategic sectors of the Newfoundland economy, particularly the fisheries and offshore, and to enable Newfoundlanders to participate in the Marine Industry nationally and internationally.

      This mission provides for the development of the Institute as an industrially relevant institution. A range of Masters Degree, Advanced Diploma, Bachelors Degree, Diploma of Technology, Technician Diploma and Technical and Vocational Certificate Programs are offered, together with a variety of industry-oriented short courses.

      The Marine Institute's vision for the future is to be a World Oceans Institute, setting the standard in education, training, innovation, and research . This vision will shape the goals of the Institute, guide its activities, strengthen its expertise, and advance its reputation for ocean excellence globally.

      To ensure academic and career success, we partner with industries that show success.  All of the sectors we train for have tremendous growth potential with new careers always being identified.  Our strong programs ensure that industry’s needs are met and that our graduates are experts in their fields.

      We also create a social environment that will prepare students for success.  We believe students are looking for programs that will lead to a career, but they are also looking for an institution that will also allow them to enjoy their studies and their quality of life.  The size of Marine Institute gives us an advantage in helping students make the transition from high school and from the workforce.  We offer a comfortable environment, a family environment.  Students get to know their instructors, their fellow students and the culture of MI.  It is all about making people comfortable. What is MI?

      Headquarters on Ridge Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the Marine Institute (MI) is Canada’s leading centre of fisheries and marine training.  We are part of Memorial University of Newfoundland, and we offer bachelors and masters degrees, one-year advanced diplomas, two-year and three-year diplomas and certificate programs.  MI is divided into three schools: the School of Fisheries, the School of Maritime Studies, and the School of Ocean Technology.

      The institute has a number of centres and units, including the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC), the Centre of Marine Simulation (CMS), the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (C-ASD), MI International and the Centre for Sustainable and Aquatic Resources (C-SAR).  These areas lead the institute in applied research and technology transfer and also provide training to a variety of industry clients.

      The Marine Institute is one of only five public educational institutions in Canada to have ISO 9001 certification. The International Organization for Standardization rating is a voluntary, globally recognized standard for organizations committed to providing quality products and services that are efficient, consistent and continuously improving.
