Description: The student will be given an overview of Heavy Equipment operation and safety including personal protective equipment, safe operating practices, hand signals, basic rigging, loading of equipment and relevant legislation.

Description: Student will demonstrate a working knowledge of recommended procedures and processes for pre-operation inspection (circle check) on a variety of heavy construction machinery.

Description: The student will be given an overview of basic maintenance procedures including identifying and selecting lubricants, proper lubrication procedures, and completion of log sheets and reports.

Description: Using a transporter, the student will demonstrate the ability to prepare, load, secure and unload tractor loader backhoe equipment and attachments.

Description: This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to start up, shut down and test the operation of equipment, and to safely perform operations such as trenching, excavating, backfilling, loading, hoisting and shuttling using a backhoe. Students will interact with others on the job in ways that contribute to an effective and safe work place.

Description: This course provides students with a basic understanding of business operation and the basic skills and knowledge required to own and operate heavy equipment. Forms of business, financial methods, machine ownership, machine operating costs, and heavy construction economics are covered.

COMM1740 Communications - Customer Service
Description: This one semester course is designed to introduce students to industrial and business communications. Emphasis is placed on analyzing audience, determining purpose and effective ordering of ideas for various written communications such as letters, memoranda, and informal reports in the technical environment. As well, all students are expected to participate in group work throughout the semester and are expected to give oral presentations. Students would also learn how to deal with customer service in a Motive Power environment.

MATH1830 Applied Mathematics
Description: This course is an applications oriented mathematics course in which the student utilizes arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and geometry to solve technically oriented problems. This course is designed to develop a proficiency in mathematics necessary for subsequent courses in the Motive Power trades. The course covers both vocational (job oriented) and generic skills (written, analytical and problem-solving).

MOTV1360 Basics of Heavy Equipment
Description: The student will be given an overview of Heavy Equipment systems, and operating controls. The basic function and usage of trade related hand tools, and GPS technology as well as a basic understanding of diesel and hydraulic operations in an applicable trade format will be covered. A major component of this course will deal with advanced preventative maintenance on a variety of heavy construction machines.

Description: The course introduces the student to soils in relation to the field of heavy construction. Concepts such as engineering geology, soil structure and composition, soil types and properties, and compaction will be explored.
