Objectives
This two-year diploma program is designed to train students to work in accounting. Various areas of accounting including financial accounting, managerial accounting, taxation, auditing and various accounting computer programs are covered. Other courses include English, economics, law, finance, and statistics. These courses are designed to broaden the students' business background and improve their generic skills. Within the accounting and other courses, students will be exposed to a number of accounting and business computer software packages. This program is part of the Mobile Computing Initiative at Algonquin College, which better prepares students for an increasingly technology-oriented workplace. As this is a laptop program, you are required to own a laptop computer and the appropriate software. You may purchase a new laptop from a vendor of your choice providing it meets the program specification as listed on our web site at algonquincollege.com/its/laptop/ Algonquin College's Technology Store offers laptops and software at very competitive prices. The curriculum has been designed to take advantage of student-centered learning and the possibilities afforded by working in a technology-enhanced environment. Students solve accounting problems using the laptop computer in the classroom. As well, the laptop computer enhances the collaborative learning environment. An optional work placement is available in the fourth level for students who meet established academic criteria. This provides students with practical, on-the-job experience in the accounting departments of various Ottawa area businesses, government and other organizations. Graduates may be granted some credits (depending upon academic achievement) toward the requirements of the Certified General Accountants' (CGA) Association program of professional studies.
