BSCI-1007 - Abnormal Psychology/Dual Diagnosis
This course provides the Developmental Services Worker student with a working knowledge of mental health disorders focusing on the symptomatology and interventions within the context of dual diagnosis.
BSCI-1008 - Interpersonal Communication in Dev Serv
This course introduces Developmental Services Worker students to the principles and skills essential to understanding and enhancing their repertoire of communication strategies as well as giving them insights into human relationships. The course will also assist students in developing interpersonal skills to effectively support persons with disabilities and to work collaboratively as a team member. Additionally, students will explore themselves and develop goals as they relate to their personal and professional development.
BSCI-1010 - Developmental Psychology
This course will examine the field of Developmental Psychology in the context of physical, cognitive, social and personality development throughout the human lifespan. The major theoretical models and research as it applies to human services will be presented. Application to persons with developmental disabilities will illustrate the various forms of support that Developmental Services Workers can provide in order to promote development throughout the lifespan.
BSCI-1011 - Person-Directed Planning
This course focuses on a variety of person centred planning methods. The student will developknowledge in comprehending, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating multiple factors associated with supporting people with disabilities.
BSCI-1020 - Augmentative Communication
This course will introduce students to the field of communication and augmentative communication in particular. The course will help the students to comprehend, analyze, synthesize and evaluate the multiple factors associated with supporting and interacting with individuals who communicate using specialized communication techniques or devices.
BSCI-1022 - Developmental Disabilities
This course introduces Developmental Services Workers to an understanding of developmental disabilities. Students will learn about causes of common disabilities and methods of prenatal assessment and screening. Various disabilities will be presented with a focus on the Developmental Services Worker role in supporting individuals with disabilities.
BSCI-1023 - Teaching Strategies
This course will examine the principles and applications of teaching and learning strategies as a means of supporting people who have diverse abilities.
BSCI-1027 - Intervention Strategies
To provide the Developmental Services Worker student with a body of knowledge of current intervention strategies applied in the support and treatment of persons with developmental disabilities.
BSCI-1028 - Interviewing in Dev Serv Work
This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary for interviewing and counselling in the developmental services worker field. This course will further enhance the student's interpersonal skills in the area of assertiveness and problem solving.
BSCI-1087 - Community & Developmental Services 1
This course provides a working knowledge of service systems for individuals with developmental disabilities in Ontario. This course will examine different forms of advocacy, interprofessionalism, and abuse of individuals with developmental disabilities.
BSCI-1088 - Recording Skills
BSCI 1088 provides the student with the concepts and legal implications of recording in Developmental Services Work. This course will include the practical application of anecdotal and medication recording.
BSCI-3001 - Field Placement 1
This course is designed to enable the student to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the academic semester to placement. Special emphasis is placed on work skills.
BSCI-3002 - Field Placement 2
This course is designed to enable the student to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the academic semester and apply skills learned in BSCI 3001 to placement.
BSCI-3006 - Applied Teaching Strategies
The student in collaboration with peers, individuals with developmental disabilities and their support network will facilitate the designing, implementing and evaluating of individual learning plans.
BSCI-3007 - Counselling in Dev Serv Work
This course focuses on empowerment and boundary issues in the context of counseling and supporting persons with developmental disabilities. Major areas of focus are family and sexuality counseling as well as supporting and counseling persons with a dual diagnosis. The course provides students with opportunities to examine and develop counselling skills in these areas.
BSCI-3011 - Community & Developmental Services 2
This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary for professional interaction within the context of the Developmental Services sector. The course will examine the various roles that a Developmental Services Worker performs with individuals, families and other professionals. Past theoretical knowledge will be reviewed, discussed and applied within the context of case examples, practical implementation and review of field placement experiences.
BSCI-3012 - Field Placement 3
This course is designed to enable the student to integrate previous academic and placement knowledge in a more independent setting. Special emphasis is placed on work skills at an advanced level.
HLTH-1115 - Health Promotion in Dev Serv Work 1
This course provides the student with an introduction to the human body and basic health care skills required to support individuals with disabilities. Common related disorders of each body system and health conditions associated with disabilities will be included.
HLTH-1116 - Health Promotion in Dev Serv Work 2
HLTH1116 continues the study of body systems, related disorders, and basic health care skills from HLTH1115. The student will continue to develop knowledge and understanding of the role and responsibilities of a DSW within an interprofessional health care team.
HLTH-3016 - Health Promotion in Dev Serv Work 3
This course provides the student with an opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in basic health care and in administration of medications appropriate to Developmental Services Work. The course will continue to focus on the health needs of individuals with disabilities. This course will continue to explore the role and responsibilities of a DSW working within an interprofessional health care team.
HLTH-5004 - Health Promotion in Dev Serv Work 4
This course offers the student an opportunity to integrate field practicum experiences with lectures that focus on complex health needs of persons with disabilities. In the classroom, the DSW student will continue to develop and apply pharmacology knowledge and skills within the role of a DSW.
PHRM-3019 - Pharmacology in DSW
This pharmacology course introduces the student to the role and responsibilities of the Developmental Services Worker in medication administration. Included are strategies to promote safe administration of medications and information about drugs commonly prescribed for people with developmental disabilities. This course will continue to explore the roles and responsibilities of a DSW working within an interprofessional health care team.
