BSCI-1004 - Life Skills Methods for Groups
The course is designed to enable the student to acquire group coaching techniques in a variety of group settings.
BSCI-3015 - Clinical Reporting
The student will be exposed to a variety of clinical reporting methods. The practice of formulating a treatment plan and review conference will be addressed. In addition, professional terminology and pertinent legislation will be discussed.
BSCI-3016 - Field Placement 2
This course provides an opportunity for the student to integrate, under supervision, his/her theoretical knowledge with the practice of counselling and specialized programming for emotionally disturbed children and youth. This placement will occur in children's mental health settings, correctional settings, educational settings and community based services.
BSCI-5001 - Therapeutic Use of Art & Play
This course is designed to enable the student to understand the key assumptions underlying Play and Art Therapy. Particular emphasis will be given to models/approaches of play and art therapy in working with children experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
BSCI-5002 - Field Placement 3
Field practice is a highly emphasized component of the Child and Youth Worker Program. It provides an opportunity for the student to continue to integrate under supervision, his/her acquired theoretical knowledge and develop their applied skills.
HLTH-1027 - Health Care
This course introduces the participant to the biopsychosocial dynamics of health, facilitating theunderstanding of the interrelated and interdependent nature of factors influencing behaviours related to health. Part of the course is focused on techniques and strategies a counsellor can use to assist a client in changing health related behaviours. Other portions of the course examines various health issues and specific diseases as well as the components of safe drug administration.
HLTH-5003 - Drugs, Addictions & Society
This course will build on the principles of biopsychosocial approach to health while concentrating on the uses, misuses, abuses and side effects of legal and illegal drugs associated with children and youth.
PSYC-1029 - Intro to Professional Practice
This course examines the values and philosophies related to parenting children and the components that influence parent-child interactions. Techniques for understanding and managing behaviour will be included.
PSYC-3003 - Behaviour Disorders-Children & Adoles.
During this course problematic behaviours of childhood and adolescence are examined. Definitions, descriptions, causative factors, prevalence and outcomes as they relate to specific disorders are investigated and assessed.
PSYC-3004 - Counselling Skills 1
This course is designed to enable the student to understand and acquire basic attending skills necessary to conduct and evaluate counselling sessions. A microcounselling format is used which involves breaking down the attending skills into component parts and learning them one at a time.
PSYC-3011 - Child Welfare Legislation
This course will review legislation that is relevant to the lives of children and youth and their families. The role of the Child and Youth Worker in settings governed by Child Welfare Legislation will be examined.
PSYC-3012 - Professional Practice
During this course, the student will analyze the demands of the role of the Child and Youth Worker in order to enhance his/her own professional development. In addition the students will obtain training in Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (P.M.A.B).
PSYC-5005 - Family Systems
This course is designed to prepare the student to explore client behaviour in the context of the family system. The student will develop an understanding of the family system, the conditions which undermine individual and familial growth and the systems therapies available to support the family. A special emphasis is placed on interpreting an individual's disturbed behaviour from the family systems perspective.
PSYC-5007 - Counselling Skills 2
This course is designed to enable the student to understand and acquire the basic influencing skills necessary to conduct and evaluate counselling sessions. Students will explore the application and impact of these skills to particular clients and client issues.
PSYC-5010 - Group Counselling
The course will introduce the student to counselling in groups through the practice and evaluation of technique. Therapeutic factors which are implicit in competent group work will inform the students' design of group formats for particular client populations. The student will acquire skill at guiding a group through its stages of growth.
PSYC-5014 - Treatment Modalities
This course is aimed at helping students consolidate their personal understanding and viewpoints about the wide range of psychotherapeutic treatment possibilities available to children and families in need. Selected treatment modalities are examined in detail, specifically in terms of their origins, philosophic orientation, key concepts and techniques.
PSYC-5015 - Advanced Professional Practice
Using issues of current relevance to children, youth and families, this course will prepare the student to understand the professional responsibilities of child and youth work practitioners. An examination of the wrap-around process, core competencies for child and youth workers, and retraining in the Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour will occur during this course.
RECN-1027 - Therapeutic Recreation 1
This course is designed to enable the student to acquire the basic skills which are necessary to design and conduct therapeutic activities for emotionally disturbed children.
SOCI-3009 - Contemporary Family Issues
This course focuses on the family situations that are prevalent and stressful in contemporary society. The Child and Youth Worker will develop an understanding of the interrelatedness of the individual, familial and social stressors in issues such as substance abuse, physical and sexual child abuse, domestic violence, etc.
