Objectives
This program will provide students with the knowledge and skills to prepare for future studies in art and design diploma programs, such as animation or graphic design. Art and Design Fundamentals will help students examine the various areas in design and visual arts and allow students to develop, nurture and strengthen their creative and artistic talents. Students will be engaged in the basics of drawing, two- and three- dimensional fine art, web design, digital photography, and portfolio development. This hands-on intensive program will help students develop and strengthen their creative, communication, research, problem-solving and conceptualization skills. The range of courses will provide the student with an opportunity to learn new skills and refine existing skills. The portfolio the students develop in this program will be valuable when applying to specialized art or design programs.

Semester 1
# AFP1100 - 003 - Ideas & Imagery
In this course, students will learn how to develop original images and concepts by experimenting with creative thinking, synectics and the design process.
# AFP1105 - 003 - Design Fundamentals
In this course, students will be introduced to the elements and principles of two-dimensional and three-dimensional design. Exploration of the possibilities inherent in even the simplest element leads to a better understanding and appreciation of the role of design in many aspects of life. The design process is used in visualizing and developing ideas for solving design problems.
# AFP1110 - 002 - Colour and Design
In this course, students will explore the three attributes of colour - hue, value and chroma - and these attributes are used to create colour relationships. Theories are introduced such as additive and subtractive colour systems and their applications. Students will study the role of colour in design by employing colour concepts in compositions.
# AFP1115 - 002 - Presentation Skills
In this course, students will be introduced to the art of delivering effective presentations. Through practice, students will learn the fundamentals of verbal and non-verbal communication.
# AFP1120 - 003 - Fundamentals of Drawing
In this course, students will be introduced to basic drawing, perspective, and sketching techniques using various media, to depict a variety of subjects.
# AFP1125 - 003 - Fine Art Studio 2D
In this course, students will be introduced to the profession of fine arts. Students are introduced to two dimensional media such as painting and printmaking, while exploring their individual ideas and concepts.
# AFP1130 - 002 - Introduction to Art History
In this course, students will examine the various phases of development of Western Art. Students will discuss and identify the various artistic styles and key influences on art throughout the ages.
# AFP1135 - 003 - Introduction to Digital Photography
In this course, students will acquire foundation knowledge related to the evaluation and application of photography. Students will also acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to create photographic images and judge these according to established standards of design and evaluation.
Semester 2
# AFP1200 - 003 - Life Drawing
In this course, students will learn to draw life forms, specifically the human figure. Through the study of human figure - the gestures, movements, and overall structure - students will develop a deeper understanding of the form. Students will develop drawing skills that will be essential in design, animation, and interpretive drawing.
# AFP1205 - 003 - Drawing from your Imagination
In this course, students will focus on drawing from the imagination using conventional and experimental media. Students will learn to develop drawn images from their imagination by using psychological impact, creativity and experimentation.
# AFP1210 - 003 - Applied Colour
In this course, students will expand their knowledge of colour theory and will learn to apply theory to different areas of art and design. Students will learn how to use the physical and psychological effects of colours to create environments, graphic material and paintings which are highly effective in fulfilling their purpose.
# AFP1215 - 002 - Fundamentals of Web Design
In this course, students will develop a basic online web-based portfolio site. The students will learn the basics of building a web site and incorporating both text and images.
# AFP1220 - 002 - Introduction to Digital Video
In this course, students will employ the principles and elements of art and design to imagery capture and manipulation. Sound and movement are incorporated as are principles of line, colour, perspective and composition. Students are encouraged to explore ideas and produce video compositions using basic techniques and software.
# AFP1225 - 003 - Analytical Drawing
In this course, students will learn to render forms and objects using shade and shadow, as well as one-point and two-point perspective, both freehand and mechanical. This course will develop skills applicable to graphic illustration, interior design, mechanical drafting, architectural drafting and rendering.
# AFP1230 - 002 - Fine Art Studio: Three-Dimensional
In this course, students will be introduced to the profession of fine arts. Using a variety of media, students will explore their individual ideas and concepts in three dimensions.
