Course description
Application Software
Students will develop essential computer skills, including keyboard speed and accuracy, file management, font management, Internet research, and operating system functions. Workshops on technical writing, interviewing skills, and resumes are also included.
Advanced Desktop Publishing
Students will learn to prepare a variety of typical print publication layouts using Adobe InDesign. Digital file conversion to Adobe PDF format is introduced, and fundamental publishing standards are applied, including type specification, page geometry, and proofreading.
Basic Design
Students will begin working with the elements and principles of design, and apply creative problem solving and visual decision-making for page layout and typographic composition. Project work incorporates research, colour theory, managing timelines, detailed specifications, and organization of many software formats for finished digital output.
Advanced Computer Imaging
Students develop practical skills for image editing and composition using Adobe Photoshop. Scanning and technical colour theory for digital images is introduced, along with standard output formats for both print and web. Fundamental instruction in digital photography and camera techniques is included in this section.
Design and Layout
Students develop vector drawing techniques using Adobe Illustrator. Practical applications include logo drawing, type design, and preparing content for use in Flash. Students will produce motion graphics for banner ads and animation, incorporating basic ActionScript with buttons to control timeline navigation and audio loops.
Advanced Composition
Students will learn XHTML coding and website production techniques using Dreamweaver. Students will design, manage, and produce a major project using CSS for typography and layout positioning. Emphasis is placed on planning for the site navigation interface, structured file management, search optimization, accessibility standards, and cross-browser compatibility. This section includes an investigation of employment options and employer expectations. Students identify skill areas related to strengthening employment goals.
Advanced Applications
Students can choose from a menu of advanced options for skill development, based on their individual aptitude and employment goals. Students will complete a major portfolio project using advanced CSS, JavaScript, Flash, and an introduction to MySQL and PHP.
Portfolio Management
Digital portfolio development: Students will produce a creative portfolio of finished work, a promotional package that highlights their specialized skills to potential employers. Graduates leave with a web portfolio to assist them in their search for employment.
Job Readiness
Work Practicum: Students will be assigned to a Work Practicum in a business, corporate, or government work site to build on the skills they have developed during the course, and gain practical experience through participation and teamwork.
