Volunteer Program Management Ontario College Certificate
ObjectivesThe aim of this program is to provide new, prospective and practicing Managers of Volunteer Programs with the skills needed to function effectively in this capacity, particularly to attract and retain volunteers and board members. Through application of management theories, the student will gain insights into leadership, motivation, human resource development, organizational climate, planning and evaluation. Courses will focus on exploring information, sharing experiences and building skills to enhance personal and organizational effectiveness. Students will gain comprehensive skills needed for employment as Volunteer Program Managers.

Course descriptionVOLM1010 Overview Of Volunteer Program Management
Description: The history and philosophy of volunteer integration into human services will be discussed. Trends and statistics will be identified. An understanding will be gained of current motivations of both volunteers and voluntary organizations. The volunteer management process and role of the Volunteer Manager will be introduced. Time will also be spent networking, sharing experiences and identifying resources that exist in the group and the community.

VOLM1020 Skills Of Volunteer Program Management
Description: This course provides the student with skills and information needed to function on the job. Students will identify agency needs and design volunteer positions within organizations. Methods for recruiting, interviewing, screening, and matching of volunteers will be shared. Ongoing maintenance and support of volunteers will be highlighted through studying orientation, training and supervision. The importance of marketing a volunteer program, developing policies and procedures, and volunteer department budgeting will be covered. Students will also have an opportunity to identify and hone their own leadership and planning skills in the role of Volunteer Program Manager.

VOLM1030 Evaluation And Recognition Of Volunteers
Description: Students will examine methods of record-keeping and learn how to evaluate various aspects of the volunteer program. Standards for volunteer performance will be developed and used to conduct performance reviews with volunteers. Methods for both informal and formal volunteer recognition will be highlighted with a view to enhancing volunteer satisfaction and retention. Criteria for volunteer termination, mobility and advancement will be discussed.

VOLM1040 Board Members As Volunteers
Description: Board members are performing crucial leadership volunteer roles within an organization. Yet these volunteers often lack support because they function outside of the volunteer management process. This course will enable the Manager of Volunteer Services to understand, support and maintain Board members as volunteers.

VOLM1050 Trends, Issues And Ethics
Description: In this course students will identify trends and issues impacting their volunteer programs. They will develop innovative methods of adapting to the current environment by sharing best practices and new perspectives. Ethics will be presented as a tool for making decisions in a changing environment.
