ObjectivesThis full year of study allows students to develop skills that extend across all elements of ENG (Electronic News Gathering). Students will plan, acquire and present news stories through the use of digital video technology and non-linear editing techniques. Through the development of unique interview skills, writing skills, and video skills, students will prepare for work as reporters in a TV newsroom or in a web-based video environment.
Practical experienceStudents will build on their first semester experiences and engage in feature and documentary production in the second semester of the program. TV news items that students create are shown on "519 online", the regions first online newscast shot exclusively in HD. The show is also streamed to the world over the internet.

JRN8000 TV Newsroom I
Description: Students in this course will produce stories for presentation on the College’s television station and broadcasting website. Working alongside assignment editors and producers in a newsroom environment, they will function as video journalists: determining stories, setting up interviews, shooting and editing. They will also gain advanced performance skills during live newscasts.

Description: Students in this course will develop a conversational style of writing that is suitable for broadcast. They will write clearly and concisely to convey facts to an audience watching TV or another form of video presentation. They will work with various types of script elements required to broadcast a story.

Description: Students in this course will explore interview techniques that apply to video journalism. They will also consider and apply journalistic ethics and laws that relate to journalists covering stories.

Description: Students in this course will use broadcast quality digital video cameras to produce and deliver news stories. They will develop a practical knowledge of digital technology as it applies to broadcast quality video and audio.

Description: This course will allow students to explore areas of freelancing and self-employment. A practical approach to small business structure and operations will provide students with a basic understanding of opportunities in the television and video marketplace.

Description: Students will gain valuable work experience while observing day to day operations in a real world factual programming environment. They will work with mentors and faculty to expand their knowledge of news and documentary work. Students will be required to complete a minimum of 80 hours work experience to be eligible for graduation.

Description: Students in this course will analyse and refine their journalistic approach, taking on significant videojournalist roles, with a focus on breaking stories, contributing to a variety of media, and submitting work for viewing by audiences. They will develop independent production skills in the areas of producing, interviewing, shooting and editing.
