Teacher of Adults - Literacy Educator Ontario College Certificate
ObjectivesThis program is designed to address the training needs of adult literacy educators both in Ontario and across Canada. It provides an in-depth exploration of the key principles, practices, concepts and issues that shape the role of the literacy educator in the delivery of literacy and essential skills training in one-to-one and group settings. Contact with and feedback from the course instructor is provided via email, internet and telephone. The program consists of 5 core courses, a choice of electives and 1 fieldwork placement. Successful completion of all 7 courses is required to receive the program certificate.

With the use of an inclusive planning process, you will learn how to design, evaluate and maintain program and services for adult literacy learners with employment-related goals while increasing organizational capacity. You will also examine the role that program management plays in the development and sustainability of programs and services.

Description: Learn to encourage independence and critical thinking in adult learners through the use of basic approaches to instruction. Students will be introduced to key topics of: self-directed learning, supporting learners with counselling techniques and learning disabilities.

ADED1160 Foundational Strategies for Literacy and Numeracy Instruction
Description: Recommended: The Adult Literacy Learner
Instructional strategies for teaching literacy and numeracy skills in an outcomes-based learning environment are explored. The role of technology, training plans and goal-directed learning in both one-to-one and group settings are used to frame the use of various instructional strategies. Develop and apply instructional strategies that respond to the reading, writing and numeracy needs of the individual learner.

ADED1170 Teacher Of Adults - Literacy Educator (Fieldwork Placement)
Description: Educators apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations by arranging to work, as a volunteer, in a literacy program. As a result of their placement activity, students will demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge acquired through course work to a real literacy setting. The placement will be supervised by the course facilitator and will rely on the development, by the course participant, of a detailed learning plan.

OLRN1048 Assessing and Evaluating Literacy Learning (Internet)
Description: Recommended: The Adult Literacy Learner.
The importance of placing assessment and evaluation into a learner-centered, goal-directed authentic context is explored. The role of assessment from Intake to Exit and a variety tools and methods are presented. Focus on an important aspect of assessing and evaluating literacy learning. Students should be able to use a learner-centered approach to assess and evaluate the skills and knowledge of individual learners to help them achieve their goals.

OLRN1820 The Adult Literacy Learner (Internet)
Description: This module is designed to help you explore the principles of adult learning with a special emphasis on applying these principles to adult literacy settings. You will examine the theory behind shaping the literacy environment to the individual - the reason why - as well as ideas for putting the theory into practice - the how. Additional software required: Adobe Acrobat Reader and Flash (free downloads)

Description: This course is designed for experienced literacy educators who have little familiarity with the development and/or delivery of literacy and basic skills programs in the workplace environment. You will gain an understanding of the complexities of relationships between business, labour and employees in the determination of workplace training needs, the key steps involved in the development and delivery of a workplace literacy program and the critical role that evaluation plays in workplace programs.

ADED1150 Professional Pathways in Adult Literacy
Description: Explore local, provincial, national and international context ? and then uses those contexts to help participants explore a personal definition of literacy. It also looks at the skills and abilities needed by the adult literacy educator in various literacy settings and uses a portfolio approach to help participants demonstrate the skills, knowledge and abilities they have as educators. Discuss the context for literacy delivery from global to local perspectives and from this context develop both a personal definition of adult literacy and a personal commitment to ongoing professional development.

Description: You will learn to identify characteristics of adults with learning disabilities, including learning strengths and challenges. Students will learn to observe and recognize possible learning disabilities during the assessment process to plan effective instructional strategies. You will also learn strategies to support the development of self-direction skills and independence in the adult literacy learner.
