ObjectivesAt Cambrian College, the Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiation Technology, Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic health science programs are all limited enrolment programs, with traditionally far more qualified applicants than spaces available. The primary objective of the Pre-Health Sciences program is to provide an alternative to those who preparing to enter health science programs.
Academic titlePre-Health Sciences Certificate
Course descriptionSemester 1
# BIO1004 - 003 - Biology I
This is an introductory course in Human Anatomy and Physiology. The course is divided into seven units beginning with the single cell, progressing to tissues, organs and selected body systems. Other body systems will be covered in semester II, BIO 1104.
# CHM1106 - 004 - Science Chemistry I
This course provides an introduction to chemistry including basic measurements and units, classification of matter, atomic theory and the periodic table, chemical formulas, bonding, shapes of molecules and polarity, chemical reactions and equations, oxidation and reduction reactions, electrochemical cells, stoichiometry, energy changes, states of matter, phase changes, solutions, electrolytes and non-electrolytes, concentrations of solutions, reaction rates and equilibrium, activation energy, catalysts, Le Chatelier's principle, and supporting laboratory work.
# ENG1360 - 003 - Reading Skills for Health Sciences
ENG 1360 is designed to equip the learner with both general and specialized reading strategies to handle the challenging reading demands of college applied health science courses.
# GEN1100 - 003 - Thinking, Reasoning, Relating
Thinking, Reasoning and Relating is a course designed to give students an opportunity to explore, evaluate, and enhance critical thinking skills. Through examination of various reasoning processes and practical applications, students will be encouraged to develop essential thinking strategies used in problem-solving and decision-making.
# MTH1113 - 004 - Pre Health Math I
This course provides the learner with the fundamentals of mathematics as they relate to all the healthcare professions. Beginning with a review of basic mathematical concepts including ratio and proportion, percentage, and scientific notation, the learner will then be able to manipulate numbers within the metric system through practical healthcare applications.

ANY 1
The following subjects are electives
one to be taken in the fall and the other in the winter
Please note: Medical Radiation stream must take PHY 1130
# FIT1105 - 004 - Health & Wellness
To look and feel our best, to protect ourselves from degenerative diseases, and to enjoy the highest quality of life, we need to place fitness and wellness among our top priorities. This course will help the learner see that becoming fit and well greatly improves the quality of their lives, will show students how they can become fit and well, and will motivate students to make healthy choices and to provide them with the tools to make lifestyle or behaviour changes.
# HSC1105 - 004 - Introduction to Health Disciplines
Sorry - no current subject description
# HSC1140 - 004 - Medical Terminology
This course is designed to provide learners with a vocabulary in medical terminology. The learner will learn how to analyze words by dividing medical terms into component parts, relate the medical terms to the structures, functions, selected diseases, diagnostic tests, medical and surgical procedures for each body system and be aware of correct spelling and pronunciation.
# PHY1130 - 004 - Health Science Physics I
A theoretical, problem-solving course in basic physics utilizing weekly assignments and tests. This course is mandatory to students wishing to enter the Health Science field of Medical Radiation Technology. Topics include, basic concepts and calculations used in health science physics, energy and the human body, heat and the human body, fluids, pressure, and the circulatory system.
Semester 2
# BIO1104 - 003 - Biology II
This course is a continuation of BIO 1004. The systems involved in elimination of wastes and control of body functions will be discussed. The body's defense mechanism immunity will be discussed.
# CHM1207 - 004 - Science Chemistry II
Prerequisites: CHM 1106 or equivalent This course provides a continuation of the basic introduction to general chemistry found in Science Chemistry I for students intending to enter Health Science programs as well as those in College Exploration. Learners interested in nursing and other health science areas will be taking demanding courses in biochemistry and clinical chemistry and this course gives the necessary background for further study in these areas. Furthermore, much of modern life depends on products of the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, and many of the environmmental threats to our quality of life on this planet are chemical in origin - as are many occupational and environmental illnesses. A basic understanding of the principles of chemistry is essential to understanding environmental chemistry as it is to further study in biochemistry and the biological sciences.
ANY 1
# ENG1204 - 003 - Health Science Communication
English 1204 builds upon program learners' understanding of effective reading strategies to explore fundamental principles of writing for both professional and academic purposes. English 1204 has been designated a General Education course as it meets the College Standards Accreditation Council (CSAC) goals of Personal Development and Social Understanding.
OR
# ENG1121 - 003 - Research & Writing/Health Sciences
English 1121 focuses on the development and practice of effective research and writing skills for postsecondary bachelor degree programmes in the health sciences.
