Pre-Apprenticeship Truck Trailer Service Certificate
ObjectivesThe Pre-Apprenticeship Truck Trailer Service Program consists of 23 weeks in school and 8 weeks on-the-job and will equip students with the basic skills required to secure a position as an apprentice. The curriculum provides the student with Basic Level apprentice training, and also provides additional skills designed to increase the student's general level of knowledge about the truck trailer service industry and to provide employment strategies, an eight week placement and academic upgrading (if required). Graduates may choose to pursue an apprenticeship in the Truck Trailer Technician trade or further training in a related field.

Description: A basic understanding of the automotive heater and air conditioning system, including service precautions and Ministry guidelines. This will also include an Ozone Depletion Certificate opportunity.

CDEV1010 Employment Strategies and Workplace Communications
Description: The student will examine the skills employers' need in today's workplace; teamwork, problem solving, decision making, ability to organize and goal setting. In addition, the student will learn life-long employment strategies for career planning; networking, accessing the "hidden job market", information interviewing, resumes, interview skills, follow up and negotiation skills. During this course, the student will develop interpersonal and written communication skills to deal effectively with employers, suppliers, co-workers and clients in industry.

COMM1290 Preparatory Communications for GED
Description: This course will enable students to strengthen their communication skills in reading comprehension, grammar fundamentals, and paragraph and essay writing order to prepare to write the Language Arts sections of the GED (the high school equivalency exam).

COMP1010 Computer Literacy for the Workplace
Description: This course provides an introduction to the basics of using a computer and Microsoft Office. Students will be introduced to the Windows navigation system, Word - a word processing program and Excel - a spreadsheet program. Students will also learn the basics of using e-mail and doing research on the internet.

MATH1000 Preparatory Mathematics for GED
Description: This course will enable students to increase their knowledge/skills in chemistry. Topics include atomic structure, states and changes of matter, chemistry of water and air, solutions, chemical bonding, gas laws, quantitative relationships, chemical nomenclature, electrolysis, families of elements and radioactivity.
TRCK1090 Drawings/Schematics and Basic Electricity
Description: This course will cover a basic understanding of the electrical flow and sources and a basic understanding of schematic interpretation and trade symbol usage.

TRCK1100 Motive Power Safety/WHMIS/1st Aid
Description: Review safe working practices, housekeeping, hazard awareness, the use of personal protective equipment, safety legislation and regulations, WHMIS, and receive an opportunity for Standard 1st Aid/CPR accreditation.

TRCK1250 Introduction to Truck Trailer Service
Description: The student will be given an overview of Truck Trailer systems, plus the operation and interpretation of precision measuring tools and meters. Basic function and usage of trade related hand and power tools. A basic understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic operations in an applicable trade format will be covered. A major component of this course will deal with part and component identification and location.

WELD1600 Welding for Truck and Coach
Description: The students will learn the fundamentals of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes as well as oxy-fuel welding and cutting. Topics will include safe operating principles, applications, equipment setup and troubleshooting.

Description: In this course the apprentice will learn the principles of operating, testing, diagnosing and repairing air brake systems and trailer foundation brakes. Description: This course is designed to enable the apprentice to understand the principles of operation, test, diagnose and repair trailer dry vans. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation, test, diagnose and repair, platform and float trailers. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation, test, diagnose and repair trailer dumps and hoppers.

TRCK1340 Trailer Electrical Systems
Description: This course is designed to enable the apprentice to understand the principles of operation of electricity and use them to repair trailer electrical systems. The apprentice is able to understand the fundamental laws of electricity used to repair trailer electrical systems and the use of electrical test equipment to troubleshoot trailer electrical circuits. The apprentice will also understand the graphics and construction of electrical circuit schematics and use them to proof calculations and verify circuit operation. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of the operation, testing, diagnosing and repair of electrical circuits, electrical circuit and protection devices, electromagnetic devices and vehicle lead acid batteries.

TRCK1350 Workshop Practices
Description: This course is designed to enable the apprentice to understand the basics of personal safety, the legal responsibilities of technicians, and customer relations in the trailer service facility. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation and the safe use of hoisting and jacking tools and other shop equipment. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation and the replacement of fasteners, locking devices, seals, sealants and gaskets. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation of fluid power systems and perform repairs to manufacturer’s standards. The apprentice is able to explain the function and operation of basic hydraulic and pneumatic components and to perform a scheduled maintenance service on a trailer hydraulic system.

Description: This course is designed to enable the apprentice to understand the principles of operation of oxy-acetylene equipment and perform typical cutting and heating operations. The apprentice is able to understand the principles of operation of MIG welding equipment and perform MIG welding on mild steel using downhand and positional techniques.
