Pre-Apprenticeship Brick and Stone Mason Certificate
ObjectivesThe Pre-Apprenticeship Brick and Stone Mason program consists of 25 weeks in-school and 8 weeks on-the-job and will equip students with the basic skills required to secure a position as an apprentice. The curriculum provides the student with Basic Level apprentice training, and also provides additional skills designed to increase the student's general level of knowledge about the brick and stone mason industry and to provide employment strategies, an eight week placement and academic upgrading (if required). Graduates may choose to pursue an apprenticeship in the Brick and Stone Mason trade or further training in a related field.

ATST1000 Academic Upgrading
Description: This course will enable students to improve their mathematical and communication skills required for the trade. This course will enable students to strengthen their mathematical skills in numeracy, measurement and data analysis, algebra, and geometry. This course will also enable students to strengthen their communication skills in workplace reading, grammar fundamentals, and paragraph and essay writing.

CARP1290 Construction Theory and Practice
Description: The student will be given a basic understanding of typical construction drawings and learn how to interpret, plumbing, carpentry, framing, site drawings as they relate to various types of construction prints. Covered in the course will be laws, rules, and regulations governing various sites as well as how the building code affects the "job site". The student will also study the "paper" aspect of a job site (residential, institutional, commercial or industrial). A basic understanding of other construction trades, including theoretical and hands-on activities exploring the roles and responsibilities of various construction trades. Responsibilities and aspects of a number of trades and specialties (architectural, engineers, planners) required to complete a construction project will also be covered.

CARP1530 General Carpentry for Masonry
Description: The students will learn and apply the knowledge and skills needed to do layout of light concrete forms and footings. Topics will include leveling and layout procedures, support, reinforcing, pouring and finishing concrete. The course emphasizes hands on work and demonstrated shop practice within a team work environment.

CDEV1010 Employment Strategies and Workplace Communications
Description: The student will examine the skills employers' need in today's workplace; teamwork, problem solving, decision making, ability to organize and goal setting. In addition, the student will learn life-long employment strategies for career planning; networking, accessing the "hidden job market", information interviewing, resumes, interview skills, follow up and negotiation skills. During this course, the student will develop interpersonal and written communication skills to deal effectively with employers, suppliers, co-workers and clients in industry.

MASO1140 Construction Safety in Masonry
Description: This course is intended for people who will be working on construction sites in masonry. This course covers Ontario’s Health and Safety Legislation as it applies to construction sites, as well as theoretical and practical training relating to basic construction hazards. In particular, hazards dealing with working at heights, propane, confined spaces, trenching and electricity.

Description: This course will enable the student to cost, cut, layout and install tile, apply grout and finish to specifications as well familiarize the student with terrazo work and working with granite and marble.

MASO1160 Introduction to Masonry Techniques
Description: Students will gain an overview of the masonry trade and masonry applications on a construction site. Masonry related tools, equipment, materials and supplies will be discussed. Topics will include how to prepare and dismantle a site according to industry specifications, the procedures for building foundation walls, and the preparation of masonry surfaces in accordance with required codes, specifications and regulations of the trade. Students will learn basic techniques for using masonry tools in an acceptable manner. Students will learn proper mortar spreading methods as well as unit placement techniques.

MATH1070 Trade Calculations - Construction
Description: The student will have demonstrated ability in basic arithmetic functions with whole numbers, demonstrated the following skills: the ability to convert SI to Imperial measurements and Imperial to SI measurements, the ability to identify, define and use linear measurements in piping systems, the ability to identify, define and calculate various solutions to problems encountered in the masonry industry.

MASO1000 Acclimatize Worksite
Description: The successful completion of this course will enable the apprentice to apply theoretical training in selecting and building an enclosure system, knowing the impact on cold weather conditions and how to select and install a temporary heating system in accordance with CSA A371 and building codes. The apprentice will also have a working knowledge of hot weather work procedures.

Description: This course covers training in the interpretation of architectural drawings, specifications, schedules, contract documents, building codes, CSA masonry standards, safety codes and materials' estimates for masonry jobs to an acceptable standard within the masonry industry.

MASO1030 Job Layout
Description: The successful completion of this course enables the apprentice to apply skills to locate a reference line (building line) on site according to blueprints and other available reference points and codes; to layout wall or surface lines and heights according to blueprints, gridlines and benchmarks; and to locate, match and select masonry units. The student will be able to lay out masonry walls or floors, spacing units correctly and in the right bond to the right gauge, according to building codes, CSA standards, contract documents and accepted work practices. Students will also lay out openings, utilities, accessories and expansion/control joints according to building codes, CSA standards and accepted masonry practice.

MASO1040 Masonry Unit Preparation
Description: Apprentices will learn how to prepare masonry units for cutting according to manufacturer’s instructions, building specifications and accepted trade practice. They will also gain theoretical training in preparing masonry units for installation and in preparing stone for cutting by locating, selecting, measuring and marking stone and cutting it according to accepted trade practice. They will also demonstrate how to finish mortar according to contract documents and accepted work practice and cure and protect mortar according to building codes and manufacturer’s instructions and contract documents.

MASO1070 Non-Structural Masonry
Description: Apprentices will apply theoretical training to install unit masonry veneer and accessories and stone cladding and accessories in a timely and orderly manner according to building codes, contract documents, blueprints and accepted trade practice. They will also build prefabricated masonry units in a timely and orderly manner according to building codes, contract documents, blueprints and accepted trade practice and erect them in a timely and orderly manner according to building codes, specifications, blueprints and accepted trade practice. In addition apprentices will parge masonry and install unit masonry pavers and accessories in a timely and orderly manner according to building codes, specifications, blueprints and accepted trade practice.
