Physical Fitness Management Advanced Diploma

  • Objectives The Physical Fitness and Leisure Management program prepares graduates to plan, market, and deliver safe and effective fitness, wellness, healthy lifestyle, recreation and leisure programs. Graduates gain and build on their communication, leadership, interpersonal, and technical skills. The curriculum is designed to develop a high level of skill in such areas as anatomy and physiology, fitness and lifestyle assessment, exercise prescription, counselling, and risk management. Through special class projects and placement opportunities, graduates gain valuable knowledge and experience in the planning and delivery of recreation and leisure programs. These skills are complemented by training in fundamentals of business and management.
  • Practical experience Students are required to complete two cooperative work terms. These work terms provide students with the opportunity to apply classroom studies to an actual work situation, gain extensive practical, on-the-job training, and earn a salary while doing so. Students are also required to do 95 hours of fieldwork placements as part of courses in first, second, and third year.

        * ENG1550   -   002   -   College Writing I

          The purpose of the course is to give students practice in the fundamentals of college level writing and research.

        * ENG1551   -   001   -   Writing Fundamentals: Ind. Study

          This course is required in the first semester of most post-secondary programs at Cambrian. The purpose of the course is to allow students to develop their independent learning skills and to review the fundamental conventions of Standard English.

        * FLM1100   -   006   -   Human Anatomy & Physiology I

          This course is designed to introduce the student to: (1) the basic organization of the human body at the chemical, cellular, and tissue levels, and (2) the structure and function of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Special emphasis is placed on the skeletal and muscular systems and their contribution to human movement.

        * FLM1150   -   004   -   Principles of Wellness/Aerobic Trai

          This course is an introduction to wellness and the principles of physical fitness activities used to develop and improve the components of physical fitness. In this regard, students are given exposure to a general overview of physical fitness, the basic design and delivery of "instructor led" fitness classes, and the principles, practice, and design of selected aerobic exercise programs including walking, running, jogging, cycling, and swimming. This course serves as an initiation into some of the practical problems and solutions of designing and delivering effective exercise programs. Students are given a considerable amount of time for hands-on experience in putting together and applying their own exercise routines.

        * FLM1225   -   004   -   Princ. Of Leisure Leadership

          This course deals with innovative leadership, methods, techniques, and theories that prepare students for leadership roles in fitness and leisure management. Leadership skills are discussed and developed. Students will acquire hands-on experience and skills during practical exercises in class, as well as during community field placements.

        * MTH1113   -   004   -   Pre Health Math I

          This course provides the learner with the fundamentals of mathematics as they relate to all the healthcare professions. Beginning with a review of basic mathematical concepts including ratio and proportion, percentage, and scientific notation, the learner will then be able to manipulate numbers within the metric system through practical healthcare applications.
          Semester 2

        * ENG1215   -   003   -   College Writing II

          Prerequisites: ENG 1550 or ENG 1580 or ENG 1490 Learners are introduced to acceptable workplace writing practices, preparing them for placements and employment in the Fitness and Leisure field. In the context of Cambrian College's General Education program and Generic Skills Standards the course will provide the opportunity for the learner to develop greater understanding of the dynamics of the workplace and the relationships among individuals and society.

        * FLM1200   -   006   -   Human Anatomy & Physiology II

          This course is a continuation of FLM 1100 and deals with the structure and function of the following: (1) integration and control systems, and (2) regulation and maintenance systems. Special emphasis is placed on those systems of direct relevance to physical activity and fitness.

        * FLM1250   -   004   -   Intro Resist Train/Exercise Class

          This course is an introduction to outdoor winter fitness activities including Nordic skiing, skating, and winter running. Students also design and present outdoor winter carnival activities. The second module looks at the principles of beginner weight training and the techniques of weight training programs. The third module involves advance instruction and practice in "instructor led" fitness classes.

        * FLM2400   -   004   -   Nutrition

          This course is designed to introduce: (1) the basic concepts of nutrition, (2) the role of nutrition in fitness and sport, diet and exercise principles, and the effective management of body weight, and (4) facts, fallacies, and fads about nutrition, exercise, and weight control. As such, the content of the course will be readily applicable in fitness testing, exercise weight control counselling, and in designing exercise and weight control programs.

        * FLM3410   -   004   -   Leisure And Human Behaviour

          This course traces the historical origins and the development of leisure and recreation. It also looks at how leisure affects human behaviour in today's society. Issues related to work, leisure time, play, sports, and recreation will be investigated and analyzed.

          Semester 3
        * ACC1220   -   003   -   Business Records

          This course provides an introduction to the keeping of the essential financial records of a business for non-business students. The student will learn to record, classify, and summarize common transactions using the double-entry system of accounting, including transactions for cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, petty cash and bank reconciliations.

        * ENG1200   -   003   -   Effective Presentation Skills

          This course helps students develop presentation skills to meet the challenge of the business world. Through practice in speeches and presentations, students will develop a professional spoken image and a confident presence. Assignments will be geared to the professional goals of each individual class.

        * FLM2315   -   004   -   Physiology Of Exercise

          This course is designed to introduce the student to the physiological responses of the human body to exercise and the adaptive capacity of the human body to the immediate and chronic effects of exercise. The course consists of theoretical and practical components and is designed as such that it is integrated with and supports the practical content and application of FLM 2330.

        * FLM2350   -   004   -   Team & Racquet Sports/Res Train II

          This course will introduce the basic rules, skills, tactics and principles of officiating for a variety of popular team and racquet sports. Students will also return to the weight room to extend their knowledge with respect to weight training. Intermediate and more advanced programs will be covered and the students will learn to expand the number of choices they have in delivering safe and effective individual weight training programs. This course is very practical in nature and provides the students with the opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge. The team and racquet sports component will also encourage students to develop sportsmanship within competitive situations.

        * FLM2420   -   003   -   Job Search & Career Planning

          This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete for and seek future cooperative education work terms and future employment. Students will gain an understanding of their personality, interests, values, and skills through a self-assessment. This personal profile will help the student develop personal, career, and educational plans. Topics for class discussion will include Employment Equity, Human Rights, Safety and Quality of Work Environment and Sexual Harassment.

        * FLM3505   -   004   -   Program Organization & Leadership

          Effective planning skills and strong leadership abilities are required for sound program development and organization. Students must understand the steps required to ensure the viability and success of projects. Teamwork and team dynamics will be a focal point of this course. Teams will be given the task of taking an idea and developing it into a completed product. All students will be involved in two practical team projects. One project will involve the planning and implementation of a special event as a large group and one project will involve the planning and implementation of a special event as small team.

          Semester 4
        * FLM1275   -   004   -   Stress Management

          This course examines the physiological and psychological effects of stress on the human body. The causes of stress and appropriate intervention techniques will also be examined in detail. Specific application of stress management shall be applied to the following situations: occupational stress, stress and the college student, stress and sex roles, family stress, and stress and athletic performance.

        * FLM2330   -   003   -   Fitness Assessment & Counselling

          This course is designed to introduce to the student a variety of basic fitness tests that are used to make up a fitness profile,particularly those that are included in the Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness, and Lifestyle Approach (CPAFLA). Topics include the basic skills in interacting with different individuals in a fitness assessment atmosphere, administering the appraisal, interpreting fitness appraisal results, counselling, and prescribing an exercise program. This course is very applied in nature and will prepare the student to become a Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certified Personal Trainer.

        * FLM2435   -   004   -   Exercise Pres & Personal Training

          This course is designed to continue the investigation of the physiological and adaptive training responses of the human body to exercise. The course consists of theoretical and practical components and is designed as such that it develops the skills for advanced fitness appraisal testing, exercise prescription, and counselling techniques. Along with FLM 2330, it will prepare the student to become CSEP-CPT.

        * FLM2451   -   004   -   Wellness Place I Fitness for Youth

          This course has the students perform a field placement related to wellness. In the first module, the students will identify the specific needs for youth and look at the design of Fitness and Leisure programs for them. In the second module, students will study the characteristics and needs of children throughout the stages of development, as well as design and deliver appropriate activities for youth. In module 3, students will design and deliver activities that promote and develop trust, teamwork and creativity. The last module involves the planning and preparation for a wilderness canoeing/camping trip planned for the start of the Fall semester in FLM 3650.

        * GER2335   -   003   -   Active Living for Older Adults

          There is mounting evidence of the importance of active living and being physically active through all stages of life. Active living can help prevent disease and chronic conditions, boost the positive effects of rehabilitation, reduce the potential for falls and injuries, improve quality of life, build and maintain social relationships, help build stronger bones and muscles, help maintain posture and balance, and prolong independent living in later life. This course will examine the importance of leisure, active living, and program planning to address the needs and interests of older adults.

        * MKT1100   -   004   -   Introduction To Marketing I

          This course is designed to be a total overview of the contemporary marketing process. Emphasis will be placed on concepts which are the basis for marketing decision-making and the environment in which marketing activities take place. Case reports will be introduced and used as part of the learning process.

          Semester 5

        * FLM2700   -   012   -   Coop Work Term I

          The first cooperative education work term shall integrate the students' classroom studies with on-the-job practical experience. Students must select a working environment that is related to the Fitness and Leisure Management field and work for the length of the semester. Students work with their employers to select and achieve a set of three learning objectives.

          Semester 6

        * FLM3400   -   004   -   Injuries And Risk Factors

          This course is designed to explore: (1) a variety of factors that pose a potential risk to individuals engaging in regular exercise programs, and (2) the causes, prevention, and basic management of common injuries that occur in specific regions of the body and/or occur as a result of participating in a specific sport. The course is both theoretical and applied in nature, serving to bring together bits of knowledge and experience gained from previous course work. As well, it should provide new insights and ideas on various factors that can threaten one's overall health and general well being.

        * FLM3500   -   004   -   Inclusive Physical Recreation

          The primary focus of this course is to identify general concepts, strategies, and practical approaches that can be useful in planning and leading inclusive fitness, recreation, and leisure activities for individuals with disabilities or unique circumstances. A well-planned program will address motor skill development, fitness, social skills, and lead to an increased knowledge of an active lifestyle. Students will acquire hands-on experience and skills during practical exercises in class, as well as during community fieldwork placements.

        * FLM3640   -   004   -   Facility Organization & Management

          The primary purpose of this course and is to present basic information, concepts, and guidelines of management to assist the student in becoming a productive member of a management team in whatever athletic/recreational setting he or she chooses. Athletic facility areas such as weight rooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, swimming pools, and service areas will be examined. Aspects of operational policies, fee structures, maintenance, budgets, safety standards and legal liabilities are also examined.

        * FLM3650   -   004   -   Well Plac II/Outdoor Leadership

          This course has the students perform a second field placement related to wellness. The semester begins with a three- or four- day canoe/camping wilderness trip. All aspects of trip preparation, including meal planning, equipment needs and safety are covered. The next module will introduce the basic rules, skills, tactics and principles of officiating for volleyball and basketball. Students will have the opportunity to plan and learn practices for their preferred sport.

        * MKT3600   -   003   -   Advertising & Sales Promotion

          Prerequisite: MKT3550 This course entails a comprehensive study of the advertising industry and the development of advertising strategy within the firm. There is considerable emphasis on critiquing advertisements, as well as actually creating them.

          Semester 7

        * FLM3700   -   012   -   Co-Op Work Term II
