ObjectivesThe Photography program provides training for students in the professional aspects of the photography industry. Digital SLR instruction will prepare the student for work in photojournalism, architectural, advertising, product, industrial, public relations, portrait, wedding and group photography. Production work includes instruction in black and white, and colour using digital printing systems. This program integrates the use of high-end laptops and digital imaging software in the curriculum.

COMM-3024 - Professional Communication-Visual Design
This course explores the relationship between visual, verbal and written experience and introduces students to the analysis and writing of texts in art and photography related contexts. Students will encounter a "continuum" of writing by and about artists, photographers, and their work ranging from the creative to the analytical and practical. By following a sequence of reading and writing assignments, all dealing with aspects of art, artists, photography and photographers, students will develop an appreciation of the value of written communication. Students will develop analytical skills and practice those skills through reading quizzes, writing objective and descriptive descriptions, critiques/reviews, analytical essays and presenting information.
FLDP-1007 - Field Placement 1
This course requires the student to complete 30 hours of working in a Photography related business. The work must be unpaid and must be related to professional photography. This is a Pass/Fail course resulting in a P or an F grade. The intent of this course is to give the student a hands-on experience in a photo studio, production facility or other professional business that has photographic services.

MGMT-3003 - Small Business Management
Artisans and professionals often decide to start and operate their own businesses as a career alternative to wage employment. The central focus of this course is on initiating self employment, new ventures and preparation of saleable proposals. Students will acquire a basic understanding of the creation, formation, operation and control of a freelance or more formal smaller scale business. In depth coverage shall be given to: market potential analysis, the need for capital and sources of that capital. These skills can be adapted and employed in the students' everyday personal life, with regards to planning, organized thought and financing.
MKTG-3004 - Marketing
The course is designed to explain and instill the basic principles of the marketing function and facilitate the practical application of these principles. The course will focus on techniques used in sales promotion, media advertising, market research, public relations/publicity and distribution.
PHOT-1001 - Practical Photography
This course is a practical introduction to small format and digital camera techniques and colour and B/W printmaking. Intended to complement Phot1009 Photographic Theory, this is an assignment course whereby students demonstrate practical knowledge and expertise by submitting regularly scheduled photographic assignments. Most of the work will incorporate digital workflow using laptop computers, scanners, inkjet printers, servers and other peripheral devices.
PHOT-1006 - Science for Photography I
This course gives the student a basic knowledge of some of the scientific theory associated with photography. The material covered includes mathematics, computer science, basic physics, light and photometry.
PHOT-1007 - Creative Design for Photo I
This course combines the theory of 2 dimensional design complimented with a selection of photographic print projects of a creative and aesthetic nature. Students will be exposed to a variety of topics within design theory, art history, philosophy and contemporary photography.
PHOT-1008 - Production Techniques I
Students will be introduced to digital camera use and Photoshop practices. Printing of digital images with practical exercises will demonstrate skills learned in class. Students will learn to produce good quality black and white and colour digital prints.
PHOT-1009 - Photographic Theory I
This course covers the theory and fundamental principles governing in-camera image creation of photographs using, for the most part, digital cameras with introduction and discussion of all camera types.
PHOT-1010 - Practical Photography
This course is a practical introduction to digital, camera techniques and colour and B/W printmaking. A maximum of 12 scheduled assignments in addition to mandatory Student Print Competition participation are given within a framework of regular deadlines. A major component of this course comprises the use of flash and tungsten artificial lighting in both location and studio settings respectively. Intended to complement PHOT1017, this is an assignment course whereby students demonstrate practical photographic skills.
PHOT-1012 - Lighting Techniques
Students will be introduced to studio lighting practices through demonstrations, assignments, and in class participation groups. Students will learn about light ratios, posing, tabletop set lighting, safety practices, metering studio lights, light modifiers, digital location photography and lighting, reflection control, texture lighting, portrait and passport lighting.

PHOT-1015 - Creative Design for Photo II
This course combines the theory of 2-dimensional design complemented by a selection of photographic print projects of a creative and aesthetic nature. Students will be exposed to a variety of topics within design theory, art history, philosophy and contemporary photography, with emphasis on the role of light.
PHOT-1016 - Production Techniques II
Students will work with digital cameras and computer imaging programs to produce andpresent images to professional standards. Students will use digital applications to manipulate, create, and control photographic images. Computers will be used to work with digital files and final images will be produced on-line and with digital printers.
PHOT-1017 - Photographic Theory II
This course covers the theory and fundamental principles governing in-camera image creation of colour and B/W photographs using, for the most part, digital SLR cameras. A large component of this course covers the theory and application of light to photographic applications. Aspects of light quality, electronic and tungsten artificial sources as they apply to location and studio settings are emphasized. In addition, an introduction to the basics of large format camera equipment is given.
PHOT-1058 - Photography and the Arts
The course will expand the students general knowledge of the history of photography and an overall visual literacy of the periods, concepts and how the various advances in photography changed society.
PHOT-1059 - Intro to MAC OS & Applications
This course introduces the student to various digital techniques using a laptop computer in the photography program. This course works in conjunction with Production Techniques and Practical Photography courses. The skills acquired in this course are applied when completing assignments during the first year and beyond. Topics include the Mac OS X environment, networking procedures, scanning prints, image file management, Web Searching, Keynote presentations and Pages word processing. PHOT-3002 - Practical Photography
This course introduces the student to the operation and application of high end digital cameras. Digital public relations photo capture and digital image assembly components, using proper lighting and camera technique, the areas of Architectural, Advertising, Illustration, Public Relations and Nature photography are covered.
PHOT-3003 - Commercial Photography
This course introduces the student to the operation and application of digital view cameras, specialized shift/tilt lenses with high-end digital cameras. The students will use proper lighting and camera techniques to create Product and Advertising photographs in a studio environment. Assignments will also include location photography of architectural subjects.
PHOT-3005 - Graphics and Web Development
This course explores the basic functions of two computer software applications: a graphics program and a web development program. The course deals with the application of these programs in the photographic industry.
PHOT-3010 - Production Techniques III
Students will gain more advanced skills with digital cameras and with more advanced workflow practices. Printing and preparation of digital images with practical exercises will demonstrate skills learned in class. This course will expand upon the skills and techniques learned in PHOT1016.
PHOT-3011 - Practical Photography
Using digital cameras, the student will produce images of commercial, advertising, creative and public relations photography to a professional standard. Also, a concise resume and business card will be produced.
PHOT-3012 - Portrait Photography
This course introduces the fundamentals of studio portraiture using digital cameras. The areas of portraiture covered will include male and female posing and portrait styles, couple and group photos. Appropriate lighting styles will be emphasized to enhance and present portrait subjects in modern and classical studio portraiture.
PHOT-3013 - Production Techniques IV
This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to produce digital files and procedures to a professional standard. Students will produce and manipulate images using digital imaging systems. This course expands on some of the topics in PHOT3010 and introduces new techniques.
PHOT-3016 - Digital Workflow
This course will explore various techniques of using digital cameras combined with laptops for image control. The emphasis will be on producing high quality colour and black and white images for use on-line or in hard copy. Image production workflow from the image capture stage to the final printed form will be a major element of this course. Students will work with various digital camera systems under a variety of lighting conditions.
WRIT-1037 - Reason & Writing 1-Contemporary Media
This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. This course will also introduce students to selected topics and concepts in contemporary media.
