Perioperative Nursing - Registered Nurse Ontario College Graduate Certificate
ObjectivesThis graduate, certificate program will provide the RN/RPN with the knowledge and skills to function effectively in Perioperative (Preoperative, Intraoperative and Postoperative) Nursing. In addition to theoretical knowledge the program provides the student with the technical skills required as a surgical team member.
Practical experienceLab days and clinical experience are integrated throughout the program. A consolidated practicum is taken at the end of the program.

Course descriptionNURS8075 Intraoperative Nursing I Theory/Lab/ Practice
Description: Current Certificate of Registration RN This course begins with a discussion of the Regulated Health Profession Guidelines for Perioperative Nursing. Topics include sterilization and scrubbing, latex allergy, resources required for the surgical teams to function efficiently, comfort measures for the surgical patient, appropriate care during the surgical procedure, count procedure, documentation, malignant hypothermia and organ retrieval. This course consists of the following two components: theory, three labs and two clinical practice days. The student is required to successfully complete all three components of the course.

NURS8085 Intraoperative Nursing II Theory/Lab/ Practice
Description: Current Certificate of Registration RN This course includes a variety of O.R. set ups and nursing considerations for specific procedures such as general surgical; gynecological, ophthalmology and ear, nose, throat (ENT). This course consists of the following components: theory, two labs and two clinical practice days. The student is required to successfully complete all three components of the course.

NURS8095 Intraoperative Nursing III Theory/Lab/ Practice
Description: Current Certificate of Registration RN This course includes a variety of O.R. set ups and nursing considerations for specific procedures such as urinary, orthopedic, plastic and vascular/thoracic. This course consists of the following components: theory, two labs and two clinical practice days. The student is required to successfully complete all three components of the course.

NURS8790 Preoperative Nursing Theory and Practice
Description: This course, which may be offered in workshop format, provides the student with preoperative knowledge and skills. Topics include communications, team building, documentation, preoperative assessment, preoperative checklist, and specific populations that include paediatrics, elderly, mentally-challenged, pregnant and developmentally challenged clients. This course will also address ethical and legal guidelines and cultural diversity. Students are expected to review the anatomy and physiology of all body systems prior to the beginning of this course. A one day clinical observation experience in a perioperative setting is included in this course.

NURS8795 Anaesthesia and Post Operative Nursing Theory/Lab
Description: Current Certificate of Registration - RN This course provides the student with the knowledge and skills that are utilized in the care of the patient undergoing anaesthesia. Topics include types of anesthesia, anesthetic drugs, communications, documentation, assessment and the transfer of patient to PACU (Post Anaesthetic Care Unit) One lab session will be scheduled.

NURS8800 Consolidated Practicum
