New Media: Convergence (Electronic/Print Journalism) Ontario College Graduate Certificate
ObjectivesThis two-semester program will prepare the graduates to be at the forefront of media convergence and be key players as newsrooms embrace multi-media presentation of news and information. Students in this program will prepare, edit and present stories in a variety of formats to meet the expectations of technically savvy consumers. Students will develop stories quickly and accurately for seamless presentation on the web, for text messaging, pod casting, radio, audio/video streaming and print/electronic documentation and publication. Students will produce stories utilizing traditional and digital technologies, under the real-world pressure of constant deadlines. The production of multi-media presentations through faculty contact deliveries, self-directed and independent studies will be key components of this program. Students will utilize advanced audio, video and digital image editing skills and graphic design techniques to enhance presentation of news in a variety of formats.

COMP8130 Computer Assisted Reporting I - Software/Spreadsheets
Description: In this course, students will demonstrate their ability to research and analyze information in order to produce investigative stories with public service in mind. By utilizing software to datamine leads for public interest stories, students will tap sources generally under-utilized in traditional reporting.

Description: Students will learn the progression of media from multiple platforms to a convergence model where media compete on a single platform. Presentation and accuracy are important, but now speed of delivery is critical to get and maintain audience share. An appreciation of developing media and market opportunities will be key components of this course.

JRN8110 Storytelling for Multiple Platforms
Description: Students will write for a variety of mediums in succession under the pressure of looming deadlines. Organization of researched and interview material as well as a knowledge of what is new and important will be the focus of this course as students prepare to apply their skills in a highly competitive environment.

Description: Law and ethics governing the application of journalism are changing rapidly with the development of new media in a culture of change. Students will enhance their critical thinking skills assess the impact of legal issues affecting media. Acceptable ethical behaviours in an environment of increasing technological change will also be explored.

Description: Students will produce news around the clock to meet audience expectations. They will upload, edit, package and post reports quickly and accurately under the pressure of constant deadlines in preparation for generating and updating news as it happens.

Description: Students will demonstrate the application of advanced wireless technologies as mobile journalists. They will gather and file stories, video, pictures and voice clips from the scene for presentation on the web, in print and on digital television and radio.

CDEV8050 Work Experience
Description: Students will develop and apply convergence skills and gain valuable real-world experience working in a multi-media newsroom environment. For this mandatory component of the program, students will be required to complete a minimum of 80 hours work experience to be eligible for graduation.

Description: Students will have further opportunities to hone their skills in the application of computer software to access and use data. They will develop a major story proposal with a focus on public service journalism. Students will utilize their research skills to produce a story of public significance and to analyze information from a number of sources and support the story proposal.

JRN8150 The 24 Hour Newsroom II - Development/Packing
Description: In addition to producing all elements of a multi-media, web based news story and its presentation through a storyboard with script, students will demonstrate the skills necessary to update a developing story and to quickly produce the story for other media platforms under pressure of deadlines.

Description: This course will provide students with the skills needed to work as an online editor in a variety of media. Students will be introduced to necessary components, from editing and formatting text with visual and audio elements, to writing headlines and references to related information in concise, easy to understand language.

Description: Utilizing wireless technology, students will research and produce materials with a combination of media presentation. Through the application of evolving technologies, students will cover live breaking news events and file print, audio and visual components from the scene to the newsroom internet web site for posting.
