ObjectivesThis graduate certificate is designed to provide practicing Technologists with the knowledge, skills, competency, and practical experience necessary to become practicing Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists. It also serves to prepare the graduates to write a National Certification exam set by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.
Practical experienceA clinical placement is a requirement for completion of this certificate. The clinical semester will be delivered at an approved clinical partner of Cambrian College. Information on placement sites will be available at the time of acceptance.
This course will provide the learner the opportunity to identify abdominal, pelvic and thoracic anatomy in multiple planes. Pathological processes will be identified where applicable. E-learning will enhance the presentation of anatomy and pathology.

This course will introduce the learner to the concepts of quality assurance practice and imaging principles used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Learners will participate in a literature review of MRI imaging principles and the impact of technological change and practice. Clinical application of imaging options will be discussed. In preparation for the clinical environment, basic MRI positioning and coil selection will be demonstrated. Contemporary and future scanning protocols and methods will be examined. Delivery methods include lecture (classroom and web-casting) and e-learning.
* MRI1115 - 003 - MRI Patient Care and Safety
This course is designed to prepare the practitioner with the knowledge and skill in screening, preparing, assessing and assisting MRI patients. Lecture (classroom), e-learning and simulation of patient interactions will cover the topics of legalities of MRI, consent, clinical history acquisition, contrast agents and pharmaceuticals utilized in a MRI suite. Patient management skills and theory such as infection control, universal precautions and IV therapy will be reinforced. Safety issues and emergency procedures concerning MRI procedures will be discussed. Delivery methods include lecture (classroom) and e-learning.
This course provides detailed information on the physical properties and instrumentation used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Topics discussed include MRI equipment, data acquisition techniques, MR hardware and software, image quality and scanning parameters. Delivery methods include lecture (classroom) e-learning.
* MRI1125 - 004 - MRI Procedures
This course introduces the learner to the practices and protocols of MR imaging of the following anatomic regions: * - musculoskeletal * - head and neck * - spine * - abdominal * - thoracic * - pelvic Signal characteristics of pathology and anomalies will be discussed. Evaluation of image quality and imaging parameters will be analyzed and strategies for improving image will be covered. Delivery methods include lecture (classroom) e-learning.
Semester 2
* MRI1200 - 003 - MRI Pathology (Independent Study)
Employing e-learning technologies, the learner will acquire an understanding of pathology and anomalies of the various anatomic regions and the effect of pathology on the MR image.
* MRI1205 - 030 - Clinical Practicum
This course provides the learner the opportunity to apply theory to practice in an approved clinical environment. It may be necessary for learners to rotate between clinical sites for short periods of time to assure a complete clinical experience. This course will prepare learners for the C.A.M.R.T. MRI certification examination. Consistent with experiential and adult learner principles, learners must document acquired competencies in a portfolio design.
