Journalism - Print Diploma

  • Objectives The Journalism program provides students with the professional skills and educational background necessary to work as reporters and editors with daily and community newspapers. This two-year program combines general education courses with practical experience gained through working on The Shield, a student newspaper that is printed both as a tabloid-sized publication and on-line, and through on-the-job field work.

        * AVL1102   -   003   -   Photography I

          This course involves instruction in basic photographic skills including photographic theory, equipment and materials, taking digital photographs, printing, and composition. Digital photography is the integral component of this course.

        * ENG1551   -   001   -   Writing Fundamentals: Ind. Study

          This course is required in the first semester of most post-secondary programs at Cambrian. The purpose of the course is to allow students to develop their independent learning skills and to review the fundamental conventions of Standard English.

        * ISP1215   -   003   -   Electronic Publishing I

          This course is intended to introduce the student to electronic publishing in the print communication industry. It will focus on the underlying principles of design and the techniques for putting them into action in a Macintosh computer environment.

        * ENG2324   -   003   -   Writing for Media Professionals

          In this course, students will develop professional media communication skills through the study and practice of the theory of communication, patterns of organization of writing, common business communications tools, usage, and style appropriate to the workplace, and an intensive review of editing and proofreading strategies.

        * JRN1102   -   005   -   Introduction To Journalism

          In this course, students are introduced to the journalism profession and the basics of determining, gathering, writing, and editing news stories. In addition to tests on journalistic theory, assignments are completed in writing, editing, and interviewing. Emphasis is on writing for newspapers.

        * JRN1115   -   003   -   Issues In Contemporary Society I

          This course takes a journalistic look at the major issues of the day. It includes lectures or presentations by leading newsmakers, opinion leaders, and commentators. Students are required to keep up with the news and prepare reports on the lectures for evaluation.

        * POL1300   -   003   -   Canadian Political History

          This subject is designed to acquaint the student with government in Canada. The three levels of government are studied. The content of the course includes the various institutions, participants, movements, and forces active in the Canadian political system. The emphasis will be on its historical development.

          Semester 2

        * AVL1206   -   002   -   Journalism Photography II

          Prerequisite: AVL 1102 A continuation of AVL 1102, students will key in on taking news photographs suitable for use in print publications. The ethics of news photography, especially in light of the new technology available to photographers, will also be discussed.

        * ECN1201   -   003   -   Macroeconomics

          This course deals with large-scale economic phenomena. Inflation, unemployment, economic growth, economic systems, supply and demand analysis, national income, money, and banking are the major topics that will be identified.

        * ENG1751   -   001   -   Job Search Skills: Ind. Study

          Prerequisite: ENG 1551 Through guided independent study, students will explore the job search process in detail and gain a comprehensive understanding of the theories and practices that lead to successful job searching and career planning. This course will also encourage further development of the independent learning skills and strategies practiced in ENG 1551 and 1581.

        * ENG3345   -   003   -   Canadian Literature

          This course gives journalism students a sense of the history and development of Canadian literature through an examination of the historical, social, and cultural issues reflected in a broad spectrum of Canadian writings.

          Prerequisites: JRN 1102 and ISP 1215

        * JRN1218   -   006   -   Newspaper Design & Production I

          Prerequisites: JRN 1102 and ISP 1215

          Semester 3

        * JRN1220   -   003   -   Investigative Journalism Methods

          Prerequisite: JRN 1102 - For Journalism students only. This course focuses on journalistic research techniques. Students will also be introduced to the art of interviews and how to conduct various types of interviews.

        * JRN2315   -   003   -   Issues In Contemporary Society II

          This is a continuation of JRN 1115. Students are required to prepare major reports on topics of current interest.

        * JRN2326   -   004   -   Advanced Reporting I

          Prerequisite: JRN 1217 or permission from the Instructor. In this course, students continue to work in practical news and feature reporting assignments of increasing difficulty.

        * JRN2327   -   003   -   Newspaper Design & Production II

          This is a continuation of Newspaper Design and Production I and directly relates to the producing of the lab newspaper, The Shield. This course, however, deals specifically with the production aspect of the publication. The writing for the paper for this semester is handled through JRN 2328 (Journalism Writing).

        * JRN2328   -   005   -   Journalism Writing

          This course deals with the writing of articles for the lab newspaper, The Shield. This includes coming up with story ideas, doing the appropriate research/interviewing, writing, and editing. The articles for this course must be of publishable quality.

        * LAW1061   -   003   -   Media Law

          The course deals with Canadian law as it concerns mass media. Specific topics include civil and criminal libel, and contempt of court, obscenity, censorship, copyright, privacy, secrecy, laws of regulatory bodies such as the CRTC and advertising groups, and constitutional provisions for freedom of expression.

          Semester 4

        * ENG3445   -   003   -   Mass Media

          Prerequisite: ENG 1550 This course examines the scope and impact of the mass media - the press, film, radio, television, the Internet, and merging technologies - on individuals and on society, with particular emphasis on how Canadian media influence our cultural and social values.

        * JRN2421   -   006   -   Field Placement

          Prerequisite: Students must have completed all subjects up to the end of the third semester and must be eligible to graduate.

        * JRN2424   -   005   -   Newspaper Design & Production III

          Prerequisite: JRN 2324

        * JRN2430   -   004   -   Advanced Reporting II

          Prerequisite: JRN 2326 This is a continuation of JRN 2324. Students occupy the senior journalistic and production roles for all areas of the production of the campus newspaper, The Shield.
