ObjectivesThe Interior Decorating Certificate is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and professionalism required for a successful career in the field of interior decorating. Graduates of this program will be prepared to seek employment in the many areas of design and decoration in retail sales and as manufacture retail representatives. Students will learn the basic skills of drawing and creating floor plans, space plans, effective use of materials and the ability to co-ordinate residential interior decorating projects through hands-on practical application. Upon successful completion of this program students will have a complete and professional portfolio for employment purposes. Areas to be covered include colour theory, lighting and accessories, fabrics and window treatments, Antiques, furniture styles and presentations.

Course descriptionIDEC1010 Advanced Interior Decorating
Description: This course will be the culmination of all the knowledge gained in the prerequisite decorating courses. Portfolios will be reviewed and critiqued for content and professionalism. Your major project and presentation will include labour and supply costing calculations as well as all other components covered in previous courses. Other topics covered are: Interior design businesses, supplier info, client consultations, customer service and legal responsibilities and requirements. All program courses and electives must be completed before enrolling in this course.

IDEC1020 Antiques and Furniture Styles
Description: The history of furniture includes an understanding of antiques, as well as a recognition of the major periods of style and how trends and influences are incorporated. Contemporary furniture of the 20th century will also be discussed and allow students to recognize particular designs and how to accurately assess a piece of furniture's worth and recognize the good-better-best categories of goods. Students will discuss all types of case goods, both wood and upholstered and the purchasing of them.

IDEC1030 Colour and Theory
Description: Students will understand the effects of colour in this course. Using colour wheels students will create colour schemes. Assignments will apply this knowledge on how colour affects light, texture and mood. Recognizing and forecasting colour trends as well as styles and fads will be developed through class projects.

IDEC1040 Fabrics and Window Treatments
Description: Natural and synthetic fabrics and the advantages of each are outlined in this course. Students will learn how fabrics are made as well as their durability. Current trends and treatments will also be discussed. Topics to be covered include blinds, shutters and valances as well as proper measuring technique.

IDEC1050 Floor Plans, Space Planning and Presentations
Description: Understanding blue prints and developing floor plans are keys to this course. Students will draw blue prints and will identify blue print symbols. Hands-on assignments will allow students to experiment with furniture layouts. Presentation boards will also be created to enhance the student's knowledge of standard industry measurements and planning techniques.

IDEC1060 Interior Materials and Surfaces
Description: Discussing the various housing materials on the market, this course will outline the merits of products including wallpaper, flooring, paint and moldings. Students will learn how to calculate the amount of space needed for a particular product and how to install it. Topics discussed include ceiling styles, countertops, trim and moldings.

IDEC1070 Introduction to Interior Decorating
Description: Covering the basic principles of design, this course will show the importance of room décor. Career options will be reviewed as well as what makes a professional portfolio. Decorating basics will be discussed and illustrated in a colour-board presentation at the end of the course. This course must be completed prior to all other program courses.

IDEC1080 Lighting and Accessories
Description: Introducing students to applications of lighting and styles, this course will identify trade specs and the many lighting options available. A variety of accessories will also be examined and how they contribute to the décor and what works in specific situations. Assignments will challenge students to design and demonstrate the complexities of lighting and accessories.
