ObjectivesThe millwright is employed in the installation, repair and maintenance of complex industrial mechanical machinery in existing and new construction. As such, the millwright deals with critical pieces of machinery which are vital to the operation of the plant. Consequently, qualified millwrights are in high demand by industry. This program instructs and trains students to diagnose, install and maintain plant machinery in a systematic manner with a high degree of efficiency. The College's new millwright laboratory provides the student with the opportunity to train on real industrial equipment utilized in industry. The Mechanical Millwright Technician - Industrial Mechanical Millwright program provides the student with training equivalent to the advanced level of the in-school component of a millwright apprenticeship. In addition, the student increases his/her skills in communication, computers, computer-aided drafting, and gains hands-on millwright training in the laboratory.
Practical experienceThe Skills Technology Institute (SkyTech) sponsors qualified Co-op Apprenticeship students to work as apprentices on a cooperative work term following their first and second academic years. This co-op placement is optional. Students will be selected based on an application process, which review past academic achievements. Please note that students on appropriate co-op placements receive credit for all in-school apprenticeship training.
Prerequisite: ENG 1551 Through guided independent study, students will explore the job search process in detail and gain a comprehensive understanding of the theories and practices that lead to successful job searching and career planning. This course will also encourage further development of the independent learning skills and strategies practiced in ENG 1551 and 1581.
# ENG1780 - 002 - Applied Communication II
Prerequisites: ENG 1580, ENG 1581 In this course, students will refine their communication skills by preparing responses to a variety of work-related situations. In accordance with MTCU requirements general education, the course will provide the opportunity for students to develop a greater understanding of work and the economy and of the relationships among individuals and society.
# IMM2440 - 004 - Machine Installation
This course will enable the student to care for and use precision measuring and alignment equipment and instruments used when measuring and installing industrial machinery.
# IMM2445 - 004 - Pumps, Valves & Piping
This course will identify the type of pump for specific applications. Students will install, maintain, and repair rotary, reciprocal, install and repair hydrostatic pumps, understand axial flow, cerprifugal, diaphragm, and lobe, as well as install, maintain, and repair mechanical seals, packing, bearings, and lube systems. Students will read and interpret engineering component drawings and manufacturer'fs specifications to ensure installations and maintenance are to the prescribed standards.
# IMM2450 - 002 - Fluid Power I
This course will apply pneumatic principles and safety procedures. Students will fit and maintain pressure direction and flow control valves, install and maintain tubing, piping, hoses, regulators, filters, and oilers, install and maintain electric and electronic proportional logic controls, read and interpret schematic symbols, troubleshoot pneumatic systems, apply trade calculations and formulas, ensure that installation and maintenance procedures are to the presented standards and specifications.
# IMM2460 - 002 - Electrical & Electronic Controls II
Prerequisite: IMM 1265 This course will enable the students to apply electrical safety codes and lock-out procedures, apply electric and electronic theory to controls, select and introduce the procedures and processes required to maintain processing and programmable logic controllers (PLC's), select, install, and maintain actuators, A.C. and D.C. motors including electric and electronic systems, and ensure that installation and maintenance procedures are to the prescribed standards and specifications.
# IMM2475 - 002 - Millwright Machining III
This course is an advanced continuation of the previous semester that will enable the student to care and use all precision measuring instruments, apply trade calculations an formula, set up and operate lathe, milling machine, pedestal and radial drill, surface grinder, set up and operate cut off and bandsaw, and use machine tool accessories to manufactured specific projects, all machine tool operations to be within prescribed tolerances and specifications.
# WLD2400 - 002 - Welding III
Prerequisites: WLD 1100, WLD 1200 This course will familiarize students with the identification of welding and cutting equipment, various processes, and the basic principles of welding and cutting by applying practical skills in cutting and shielded metal arc welding. This course builds on the skills and knowledge previously acquired in WLD 1100 and WLD 1200.
This is a self-directed learning course where students become familiar with provincial legislation that applies to trades workers, the ethical responsibility of trades workers, and quality standards that affect the workplace. In accordance with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities' general education requirements, this course provides an understanding of the history and organization of work and of working life challenges for the individual and society.
# IMM1255 - 004 - Material Handling System
The course will enable the student to install and maintain belt, roller, bucket, chain, screw, and air conveyor systems. They will install and maintain idlers, take-up units, scrapers, skirting, screens, chutes, and vibrators, install, align, and maintain drive units, material handling equipment, and splice belts, and ensure that installation and maintenance are to the prescribed standards.
The focus of this course is on detecting and correcting potential trouble spots and scheduling routine inspections with computerized checklists. Studies of essential form of preventative and predictive maintenance systems, equipment records, checklists, inspection schedules, inspection report and equipment cost records are covered by using the computerized alignments systems.
# IMM2550 - 002 - Set-up and Use Machine Tools IV
In this course, students will set up and perform milling operations such as slotting, facing, boring, and cutting keyways and gears by using high speed steel (H.S.S.) and carbide tool bits and by machining to within plus or minus .022" or within prescribed standards and specifications.
# IMM2555 - 004 - Fluid Power II
In this course, students will learn to apply hydraulic principles and safety procedures, hydraulic fluids, types and applications, install and maintain power units, pump, filters, accumulators, and heat exchangers, install and maintain filters, strainers and contamination controls, install and maintain fluid conductors, pipe, tubing, hosing, and associated fittings, fit and maintain pressure direction and low control valves, read and interpret schematics and symbols, install and maintain linear and rotary actuators, install and maintain electric and electronic system servo-proportional logic controls, apply trade calculations and formulas, and install and maintain systems to specifications.
# IMM2570 - 002 - Industrial Automated Control
This course will enable students to understand the principles of proportional and servo valves and the electro digital control of these styles of valves in Industrial Automation Systems. The student will be introduced to relay ladder logic circuits and the basic application and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
# IMM2575 - 002 - Prime Movers and Machinery
Students develop the knowledge and principles of applied mechanics and thermodynamics as they pertain to the Trade Industrial Mechanic (Millwright).
# IMM2580 - 002 - Technical Drawings & Schematics II
Students will develop the ability to effectively use manufacturer's manuals, and to sketch and draw machine component parts, including sectional views.
# WLD2500 - 002 - Welding & Fabrication
Prerequisites: WLD 110, WLD 1200, WLD 2400 This course will familiarize students with the identification of welding and cutting equipment, various processes, and the basic principles of welding and cutting by applying practical skills in cutting and shielded metal arc welding. This course builds on the skills and knowledge previously acquired in WLD 1100, WLD 1200, and WLD 2400.
