Academic titleIndustrial Maintenance Mechanic Ontario College Certificate
Course descriptionLevel One
DRWG1430 Drawings And Schematics - IMM
Description: The successful completion of this module will enable the student to read and interpret mechanical drawings and trade-related blueprints and generate basic drawings.
Hours: 60
Credits: 4
ELEC1080 Electricity And Motor Controls
Description: Prior to PLC, motor control was handled by hardwiring motor starters which the student will become familiar with before working on PLCs. Basic circuit wiring is also studied.
The course is also an introduction to Electric Motor Controls and Programmable Logic Controllers, as well as number systems. The design criteria for the first programmable controller was specified in 1968 by the Hydramatic Division of the General Motors Corporation. The primary goal was to eliminate the high cost associated with inflexible, relay-controlled systems. The specifications required a solid-state system with computer flexibility, suited to survive the industrial environment, to be easily programmed and maintained by Plant Engineers and Technicians, and last, but not least, to be reusable. Such a control system would reduce machine downtime and provide expandability for the future.
Hours: 60
Credits: 4
MATH1290 Trade Calculations And Science - IMM
Description: This course will enable the student to understand the apply math related to the industrial maintenance trade and apply the basic principles of applied mechanics, including mechanical advantage, work, power, force, torque, efficiency, levers, moments, friction, potential and kinetic energy. The student will also be able to apply the basic principles of strength of materials including composition and properties of materials, stress and strain, tension, compression, shear, torsion, stresses in beams and columns. As well, the student will have a basic understanding of the principles of thermodynamics including heat transfer, specific heat, temperature, coefficients, thermal expansion, latent heat, conduction, convection, radiation and refrigeration.
Hours: 44
Credits: 3
MILL1010 Industrial Maintenance Theory
Description: This course will provide the student with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical experience of industrial maintenance applications. In addition to scheduled class time with teachers, independent study time is provided for students to study the theory and technical terms presented in class, and to complete assignments.
Hours: 288
Credits: 19
MILL1030 Shop Practice
Description: This practical portion of the Industrial Maintenance Mechanic program will provide the student with the necessary basic skills required by the Millwright trade. The student will be able to troubleshoot, repair and maintain industrial and plant equipment and be able to perform the required skills to keep machinery in good state of repair.
Hours: 672
Credits: 23
MILL1120 Safety And Communications - IMM
Description: This course enables the student to work with scheduled reports as well as communicate effectively with their immediate supervisor. The emphasis is on effective written communications. Students will also become familiar with safety legislation and basic computer applications.
Hours: 16
