ObjectivesThe Health Office Administration program will provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in manage a variety of health office environments. You will study various business and health related courses. This program will provide exposure to dental, medical and other specialized health office settings. You will also learn the skills specific to working as a clinical secretary/coordinator in a hospital setting.
Practical experienceYou will have the opportunity to consolidate your skills and classroom theory through an 8-week work placement at the end of the second year of the program.

ADMN1030 Introduction To Health Care Delivery Systems
Description: This exploratory course is intended to provide a broad overview of the Canadian and Provincial health care systems with an emphasis upon current issues and concerns. Continuing developments in health care reform will be explored. The role of various health care providers will be examined as changes in health care reform continue to impact on all members of the health care team. The consumer role in health care will be studied with a critical look at the influence of consumerism and its impact on health care from a financial and delivery perspective.

ADMN1040 Health Care Terminology
Description: Providing an understanding of medical terminology that is often used in health office administrative settings, this course teaches the medical terms in a variety of health care settings. Note: Students are required to attend 9 in-class sessions. Instructor will provide a schedule the first night of class. This course is a credit in the Health Office Administration program(1047) .

ADMN1050 Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology
Description: This course will build on the knowledge acquired in Health Care Terminology by integrating medical terms with an in depth understanding of the anatomy and physiology of each body system. Diseases, treatments and related diagnostic tests associated with each body system will also be studies in some detail.

ADMN1130 Medical Office Administration
Description: Focusing on procedures and administrative services/tasks that apply to a variety of health care settings, this course builds on and draws from other courses within this program. A variety of teaching/learning methods will be used, as well as a variety of practical settings. Independent study, group work, community research assignments, tutorials, and classroom discussion will be used.

COMM1410 Fundamentals for Effective Written Communication
Description: This course is designed to help students acquire accuracy and clarity in written communication for business workplace settings. The course will also help students develop writing skills that reinforce the use of correct grammar and mechanics. Emphasis will be placed on applying correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling to a variety of business-related documents.

Description: Introducing word processing and spreadsheet applications on a microcomputer, this course will teach: entering text, developing solutions to business problems, describing the processing cycle of a computer and how data is stored, the function and type of storage used in computers, input and output operations and the impact of computers on society.

Description: This course will provide the student with a variety of health office administrative policies, procedures and practices that will be useful in management of health offices. The student will have the opportunity to apply general office administration concepts to a variety of health office settings.

COMM2020 Communication In Health Care
Description: The focus of the course is to learn skills of communicating that can be applied in a variety of health care situations and settings. Topics will include techniques effective in dealing with the client under stress, including the aggressive, anxious, abused, substance dependent, depressed or grieving client. The student will also learn appropriate ways of relating to children and adults in different life stages, and of interacting with clients who have disabilities affecting communication. Also addressed will be the development of intercultural communication skills.

COMP1140 Computer Applications In The Health Office
Description: This course will focus on the examination of selected computerized health applications that one would most likely encounter in a physicians office. Common elements of scheduling and billing generic to other health disciplines are highlighted. This course is delivered using a problem based learning approach. The student will work through selected learning modules in a self-directed manner. Medical office simulations will consolidate the student’s ability of manage components of practice management in the computerized environment. The ethical/legal considerations regarding the use of computer generated client information will be examined in this course.

Description: This management course will equip students with various practical methods of handling the documentation of patient information. Students will learn how to effectively administer short term and long term planning strategies. by learning applications of basic operational systems, students will be able to enhance productivity in any health office environment. These students will learn to select the appropriate organizational structures to coordinate a well-ordered, well-regulated health office.

ADMN2030 Dental Science & Administrative Practice
Description: This course will build upon learning that has taken place in the first year. The student will learn about identification systems, and further develop skills enabling him/her to read, understand and transcribe information and symbols on client records, such as prescriptions, odontograms, and treatment records. This course will include an orientation to the philosophy of the prevention of dental disease and the effect of nutrition on oral health. This course will provide sufficient information for basic employer-directed preventative health teaching of dental clients.

ADMN2090 Client Health and Office Implications
Description: Students in this course will discover the effects of failures in the normal functioning of body cells, organs and systems. The most common disorders of each body system will then be discussed. Some attention will also be given to prevention. Students working in a hospital setting will be prepared to prioritize orders.

Description: This course will introduce students to some of the unique aspects of the health insurance office environment. The goal of this course is to enable the student to produce error-free documents in the health services setting. ADMN2050 Integrated Office Management
Description: Integrated Office Management builds and expands upon learning achieved in previous semesters, thus effectively preparing the student for integration into the workplace setting. Workplace simulations will emphasize advanced skills in the health office and hospital environment. Guest speakers from a variety of occupational settings will address issues, responsibilities, professional expectations and the demands of working in health administration. The importance of ongoing education and professional development will be discussed. The student will learn how to update a professional resume, cover letter, and practice interviewing techniques in preparation for his/her placement experience and eventual job search. Professionalism in health care settings will be reviewed emphasizing dress, manner and appearance. This course uses facilitated class discussion format and the application of knowledge through the completion of simulated work experiences.

Description: Upon completion of this course, students must demonstrate the ability to touch-type at a minimum net speed consistent with standard business requirements by successfully completing a five-minute typing test using new material. Exemptions may be granted for those providing acceptable documentation as proof of their ability to meet course outcomes.

ADMN2130 Work Field Placement
Description: During the last 8 weeks of this program (280 hours) the student will be required to apply knowledge and skill acquired throughout the program by working in the occupational setting of his/her choice.* In most cases, the student will work under the direction of an employer or preceptor. The student once familiar with the workplace setting will work more independently (at the discretion of the employer/preceptor). This work place experience may include medical, dental, chiropractic, optometry offices, hospital clinical settings, long term care facilities, outpatient clinics and urgent care or walk in clinics, and related positions in industry, e.g. (insurance companies). The student is required to secure his/her placement area with the exception of hospitals. Other placements identified by the student must be approved by the program coordinator. This is an unpaid work experience.
