Entry requirementsIt is designed for students who speak English as their second language and need to improve their language skills for purposes of entering university or college career programs. Only domestic students (i.e. citizens, permanent residents, refugee claimants) would be admissible to this program. International students in Canada on a visitor's visa or study permit should enrol in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program at Fanshawe College.

EASL-1005 - High Intermed Reading-ESL
EASL0001 - High Intermediate Reading for ESL is designed for non-native speakers of English who want to develop more effective reading, vocabulary-building and language analysis skills. Selected readings taken from a wide range of authentic sources found in the text and on the Internet introduce students to reading skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and inferencing, and vocubulary-binding strategies such as identifying figures of speech and using context to guess the meaning.

SKLS-2001 - High Beginning Grammar Skills for ESL
SKLL0001 - High Beginning Grammar Skills for ESL is designed for non-native speakers of English who have some limited previous exposure to the language but want to improve their understanding of fundamental grammatical structures, in both spoken and written formats. The course will focus on basic verb structures, question-making, short answers, adverbs of frequency, polite requests and simple modals.

SKLS0003 - High Intermediate Grammar Skills for ESL is designed for non-active speakers of English wo want to develop and consolidate their ability to use complex grammatical structures effectively and appropriately. The course includes a review of tenses and an in-depth study of the passive voice, modals, gerunds and infinitives and implied conditionals.

WRIT-1026 - High Begin Reading & Writing Skills-ESL
WRIT0001 - High Beginning Reading and Writing for ESL is designed for non-native speakers who wish to improve their ability to read and write in English. The reading section will cover reading simple prose passages; decoding signs, warnings, and labels; understanding written instructions, requests and invitations; and answering questions related to prose and non-prose items. The writing section covers filling out forms; writing instructions; creating paragraphs and simple composition (e.g. personal information, narration, description, comparison/contrast); and developing editing and proofreading techniques (e.g. punctuation, capitalization, spelling).
WRIT-1027 - Intermed Reading & Writing Skills-ESL
WRIT0002 - Intermediate Reading and Writing is an integrated course designed for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their ability to read English text with speed and accuracy, as well as to express ideas effectively in correct sentences and paragraphs. The course will focus on vocabulary development; reading comprehension; reading strategies such as prediction, reading for main ideas and details, inference, writing paragraphs that conform to English patterns of rhetoric.
WRIT-1028 - High Inter Writing for ESL
WRIT0003 - High Intermediate Writing for ESL is designed for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their academic writing skills. While the primary focus of this course is on the paragraph, the final unit of instruction moves the student from the paragraph to the five paragraph essay. Because reading and writing skills are inextricably linked, students will read and analyze various model paragraphs and essays that illustrate the rhetorical modes and other techniques of writing that they hope to learn.
WRIT-1029 - Advanced Academic Writing-ESL
WRIT1005 is designed for ESL students who want to develop and strengthen academic writing abilities that will help them to succeed in post-secondary programs. With a focus on production of coherent and cohesive essays, WRIT1005 also emphasizes the importance of effective composing strategies and skills, sentence-level correctness, and efficient editing/proofreading skills.
