Computer Systems Technician Ontario College Diploma
ObjectivesThis program, Computer Systems Technician, is a two year Ontario College Diploma program that provides comprehensive training for students wishing to work in PC, networking or application support. The program emphasizes the installation and configuration of microcomputer systems and networking equipment. Students will also be trained in current operating systems from Microsoft as well as UNIX. In addition, the program will provide exposure to installation and configuration of web servers, database servers and mail servers as well as the basics of security. Upon completion of the program, students will have the knowledge necessary to take exams for the following certifications: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA's A+, Network+ and Security+, and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA).

BUSI-1005 - Introduction to Business Processes
The purpose of this course is to explore the various functional areas of business in Canada and to demonstrate the interrelationship among these areas. Students are introduced to many concepts, including major business trends, the role of government in business, marketing, operations, employee-management issues, financial resources management, business ethics, social responsibility and community-related philanthropy.
BUSI-1060 - Strategies for Success
This course presents and helps to develop some of the skills required to achieve college and career success. Areas of focus include: goal-setting, time management, note-taking from texts and lectures, study skills, test preparation strategies, and managing college life.
COMM-3047 - Communication for IT Professionals
This course develops IT students' business andtechnical communication skills in both oral andwritten formats. Students produce a variety ofwork-related documents appropriate for aprofessional, technological environment. Thesedocuments include an operational manual, shortreports, proposals, letters, memos, and e-mails.Students use standard electronic communicationtechnologies in this course and submit allassignments through FOL.
INFO-1119 - Operating Systems&Hardware Fundamentals
This course deals with the concepts of computer hardware and software structure. It includes the components of a computer and how they relate to one another. In addition, the parts of the operating system and how they work together with the hardware to support application programs will be described.
INFO-1120 - Database Fundamentals
This course is an introduction to the design and development of database systems. A data-modeling tool based upon the Unified Modeling Language will be used to capture and refine the student's database designs. Subsequently, these designs will be transformed into a working database. The student will have an opportunity to develop a complete database application using two current relational database products.
INFO-1123 - Windows Active Directory
This course is an introduction to the Windows server operating system. Windows server is one of the most widely used operating system in the world today for the management of networked environments. Topics will include the installation and ongoing maintenance of current Microsoft Windows server operating systems, setting up clients, and the use of various tools for configuration and maintenance. The focus of the course will be on Windows Active Directory domains.
INFO-1124 - Computer Security Concepts
Learn the basics for securing data on computer systems and the role of the ethical hacker and security professional. Topics covered in this course will demonstrate the security principles of Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability. Common hacker attacks and system vulnerabilities will be studied. Encryption methods used to secure data and authenticate users will be examined. Principles of password security and password cracking tolls will be used in class. Security concerns for the operation of wireless networks and the requirements for secure deployment of a wireless network will be discussed.
INFO-1125 - Linux Operating Systems
Open Source Operating Systems are becoming mainstream with more implementations now finding their way to the client desktop as an alternative solution. The demands for technical skill sets in a UNIX environment are no longer limited to a few select mission critical services in today’s networks. This course is intended to introduce the student to the UNIX Operating System; emphasis however will be on Open Source Linux. Topics include basic operating system commands, file systems concepts, introductory security, and backup utilities.
INFO-1127 - Windows Mail & Web Servers
This course is an introduction to Windows-based messaging and web servers. Topics include server and client installation, configuration, security, performance, connectivity and administration. Protocols and enterprise level solutions will be highlighted. With millions of IIS web servers and Exchange mail servers deployed in corporate IT environments worldwide, graduates will likely manage several of these servers during their career using the knowledge and skills acquired in this course.
INFO-1135 - Networking Fundamentals-CCNA1
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of networking; from fundamentals to advanced applications, thereby providing a solid foundation upon which to build their Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) training. It is based on a top-down approach to networking and emphasizes the concepts and skills required to design networks, while providing opportunities for practical application and hands-on experience by teaching students how to install, operate, and maintain networks.
INFO-1140 - Routing Protocols-CCNA2
This course discusses the fundamentals of routing protocols. The course includes concepts of static and dynamic routing as well as the comparison of distance vector and link state routing protocols. Routing protocols and technologies are discussed, including RIP, RIP2, OSPF, EIGRP, VLSM and CIDR.
INFO-1149 - Security: Vulnerabilities
Learn the basic vulnerabilities of computer operating systems and networks and the techniques hackers use to exploit these vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities of operating systems and web applications will be explored. The use of Virtual Private Networks to protect information will also be examined.
INFO-1150 - Programming Fundamentals
This course is an introduction to the fundamentalconcepts of computer software design andconstruction. Students will first use anobject-based learning environment to learn how towork with objects and methods. They will thentransition to a production programming language towrite programs to solve common problems.
INFO-3014 - Database Servers
This course is an introduction to the basics of working with relational databases and database servers. Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server will be used as learning platforms. A basic knowledge of how to manipulate data will be gained using Access. Then, using SQL Server, the topics of database server administration such as user management, space management, and backup and recovery will be examined.
INFO-3065 - Hardware 2
This course is a continuation of topics relating to operating systems and hardware. Topics will include: PC architecture, PC configuration, PC hardware trouble shooting, server hardware, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery. Concepts covering backup systems and media will be a focus. SCSI and RAID configuration will be included. Conceptual coverage with be reinforce with hands-on labs activities.
INFO-3075 - Windows Network Services
This course will provide the student with the advancedtraining necessary to configure and administer Microsoft Windows ActiveDirectory services. The focus of thiscourse will be on using advanced services in current Microsoft Windows Serverenvironments.
INFO-3076 - Windows System Utilities
This course will focus on the system utilities that are required to do advanced administration of Windows servers. Special attention will be paid to the configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of an Active Directory domain environment.
INFO-3092 - LAN Switching & Wireless-CCNA3
This course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to learning the technologies and protocols needed to design and implement a switched network. Students learn about Cisco's hierarchical network design model and how to select devices for each layer. The course explains how to configure a switch for basic functionality and how to implement Virtual LAN's, VTP, and Inter-VLAN routing. The different implementations of Spanning Tree Protocol are presented, and students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to implement a wireless LAN in a small-to-medium network.This course is a part of the Cisco Networking Academy Program - CCNA3 Cisco Certified Network Associate curriculum.
INFO-5068 - Linux Operating Systems-Adv
This course is a continuation of the studies introduced in INFO1125 “LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMS”. Topics include advanced operating system commands, file system security, network configuration, shell script processing for the Bourne, and Bash shell environments. Source coding and compiling using the C language will also be introduced along with kernel tuning and compiling.
INFO-5084 - WAN Technologies-CCNA4
This course explains the principles of traffic control and access control lists (ACLs) and provides an overview of the services and protocols at the data link layer for wide-area access. Students learn about user access technologies and devices and discover how to implement and configure Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and Frame Relay. In addition students will learn additional IP services including NAT, DHCP and IPv6. Teleworker architectures and services including Cable, DSL, and VPN basics are introduced.
MGMT-3036 - Professional Development-Career Planning
This course introduces the student to the nature and role of Human Resource functions in an organization, with a focus on the implications for personal career management. Human resources planning and processes will be explored through class discussion, research and case study, from the perspectives of the employer and the employee / job applicant. Work search skills and resume writing will be included, along with an individual career management project.
MGMT-3052 - Understanding Workplace Behaviours
This course provides a broad understanding of the workplace by investigating individual, group and organizational behaviours. Students will be given the opportunity to assess their own behaviours while observing and discussing the diverse behaviours of others as they interact in various capacities, situations and assorted environments. By studying human social behaviour under the context of an organization, students should experience an easier transition while adjusting to any changes in future workplace and/or career choices.
WRIT-1034 - Reason & Writing 1 - EAP
This course will introduce students whose first language is not English to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. Special attention will also be paid to developing academic vocabulary, correcting common ESL errors, enhancing academic listening and note-taking skills, and improving oral fluency and confidence.
