Practical experienceStudents operate four broadcast properties in Fanshawe College's new School of Contemporary Media building, which is equipped with the latest in broadcast facilities.

COMM-3029 - Communications for Media & Art
Media and Design employees require targeted messages and persuasive approaches. In this course students will learn various communication and writing formats and techniques such as brainstorming and researching concepts, creating proposals, copywriting, story boarding, pitching ideas, and creating effective, professional job search pieces. Teamwork culminating in a group presentation will model workplace practices. Issues and norms regarding copyright and the use of appropriated text, images and sounds as well as digital rights will be examined. Professional standards for workplace writing will be reinforced in all assignments.
FILM-1001 - Film Criticism I
This course is designed to develop a critical approach to the medium of film; to examine individual creative expression in the films of important directors from various countries, with emphasis on cinematic history and theory; to develop the ability to identify technical aspects of film and to discern mediocre and excellent use of filmmaking technique.
FLDP-1009 - Field Placement 1
This course is designed to have the student actively become involved within the community through a field placement in television. Depending on the location, the student may participate as part of the television production and/or operational crew. The student must function effectively as part of the team when interacting with staff, crew, talent and other volunteers during the productions. They are also encouraged to use the experience to develop and enhance their personal professional development.
FLDP-3004 - Field Placement 2
This course provides the student with intensive practical experience in the application of theoretical knowledge to all phases of television STUDIO and FIELD production. The students create, develop and produce regular and consistent production content programming for broadcast. The emphasis of this course is to advance the student through various production roles in a simulated working broadcast environment. Students will incorporate production practices within a team atmosphere to generate responsible programming.
MKTG-1052 - Media, Sales, Marketing & Promotion 1
This course focuses on the Marketing Mix of Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Students will learn how businesses market their product and services. Special emphasis will be placed on the promotion aspect which involves the total Integrated Marketing Communication process.The course will examine the global aspect of marketing initially and then concentrate on specific media application for each program.
MKTG-3031 - Media, Sales, Marketing, Promotion 2
This Course will focus on the sales process of prospecting, pre-approach, approach, presentation, negotiating buyer concerns (handling objections), closing and follow up activities. Emphasis will be placed on the Price component of the IMC.
PSYC-1018 - Human Relations
This course will identify basic psychological information as it applies to the understanding of human interaction. This knowledge will increase the students awareness of the processes involved in human communication and will be applicable in both professional and personal life experiences.
TVSN-1059 - Production Theory & Techniques
This is a course designed to provide the Television student with fundamental production theory and techniques commonly used in the Broadcast Television industry. Emphasis will be placed on terminology, operational practices and personnel responsibilities in relation to production using the most current reference information possible.
TVSN-1063 - Studio Operations and Production
The student will receive group hands-on practical training on the mechanical and electronic function of various television operational equipment including; studio camera, video, field camera, switcher, audio, character generator, server and lighting. The student will also receive practical operational experiences in broadcast production procedures and industry practices within a cooperative team-oriented learning environment and will have an opportunity to apply their hands on training during productions through out the term.
TVSN-1064 - Technicial Fundamentals
This is a course designed to provide the student with a theoretical knowledge of Television Production terminology, equipment, operational practices and personnel responsibilities. This course focuses on the underlying technology within a Television facility.
TVSN-1065 - Non-Linear Editing and Graphics
This course will introduce Television Broadcasting students to basic post production, emphasizing Non Linear Editing and Graphic Design. The primary component is to acquaint the student with industry editing concepts, procedures and styles. Basic design principles will provide the foundation of graphic design use. Through lectures and practical based sessions, students will learn broadcast standards for post production editing and graphic design software. Media and file management will also be covered.
TVSN-1067 - Distribution and Operation Fundamentals
This is a course designed to provide the student with a theoretical knowledge of Television Production terminology, equipment, operational practices and personnel responsibilities. The technology and operator roles in distribution within the Broadcasting Industry will both be explored in detail.
TVSN-1068 - Studio and Field Production 1
The student will receive further practical training in studio production and operations, electronic field camera integration and operational techniques within a cooperative team-oriented learning environment.
TVSN-1069 - Production Development 1
This is a course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to develop his/her creative ideas into campus-related quality programming for air. Emphasis will be placed on the development and progress of programming in relation to quality, adhering to broadcast standards, audience relations and "codes of conduct". This is a cooperative learning environment with student production teams working through all stages of production development.
TVSN-1070 - Non-Linear Editing and Graphics 2
This course is designed to provide the Television Broadcasting student with the opportunity to develop their fundamental computer-based Non-Linear Editing and Graphic Design skills as they relate to the Television industry. A basic level of design principles will be taught to provide for continued graphic skill development throughout the program. An advanced approach to Non-Linear editing will be taught in order to capitalize the student's current skill level with Non-Linear editing.
TVSN-1071 - Broadcast Operations 1
This course provides the student with intensive practical experience in the application of television broadcast programming and operations. The emphasis of this course is to expose the student to the various roles responsible for operating a campus television station-Fanshawe Television. TVSN-3013 - Broadcast Technology
This course is designed to provide basic technical knowledge of the equipment and systems that support the Television Broadcasting industry. The course is theory-based with practical demonstrations, examples andhand-outs outlining basic broadcast technology equipment, standards and practices.
TVSN-3014 - Studio and Field Production 2
This course provides the student with intensive practical experience in the application of theoretical knowledge to all phases of television STUDIO and FIELD production. The students create, develop and produce regular and consistent production content and LIVE daily programming for broadcast. The emphasis of this course is to advance the student through various production roles in a simulated working broadcast environment. Students will incorporate production practices within a team atmosphere to generate responsible programming.
TVSN-3015 - Non-Linear Editing and Graphics 3
This course is designed to provide hands-on practical instruction of the post-production process in the television broadcasting industry. Through a series of projects and instructor guided tutorials, the students will gain experience in both non-linear editing and graphic design software packages. Both subjective and objective issues are discussed, explored and critiqued in the creation of projects and exercises.
TVSN-5002 - Studio & Field Production 3
This course provides the student with intensive practical experience in the application of theoretical knowledge to all phases of television STUDIO and FIELD production. The students create, develop and produce regular and consistent production content programming for broadcast. The emphasis of this course is to advance the student through various production roles in a simulated working broadcast environment. Students will incorporate production practices within a team atmosphere to generate responsible programming.
TVSN-5005 - Career Development
Designed to develop and enhance the student's preparation for employment within the television industry and to provide an opportunity for a program-related PRACTICUM within the industry. The course emphasizes professional communication skills, career and placement research, professional preparation, and the development of portfolio and networking skills. Depending on their career goals, interests and objectives, as well as their qualifications and recommendations from faculty, the student will complete a 4-WEEK PRACTICUM at the end of the term either within the industry in; television broadcasting, video production field, or community television. Other Practicum areas may include; campus station operations and independent production projects.
TVSN-5006 - Non-Linear Editing and Graphics 4
This course is designed to provide hands on practical instruction of the post production process in the television broadcasting industry. Through a series of projects and instructor guided tutorials, the students will gain experience in both non linear editing, graphic design and 3D animation software packages. During this semester the students are introduced to techniques that relate to 3D creation, animation and rendering for television projects

WRIT-1037 - Reason & Writing 1-Contemporary Media
This course will introduce contemporary media students to essential principles of reading, writing, and reasoning at the postsecondary level. Students will identify, summarize, analyze, and evaluate multiple short readings and write persuasive response essays to develop their vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking. This course will also introduce students to selected topics and concepts in contemporary media.
