Bachelor of Science with Specialization in Exercise Science/Clinical Exercise Physiology
ObjectivesThe Specialization in Exercise Science (Clinical Exercise Physiology Option) addresses the physical activity needs of special populations. If you have an appreciation for persons with a disability or chronic disease condition, their lifestyle, and their exercise possibilities, you will find this program of interest. In this program you will learn about the health care delivery system and its implications for the field of the adapted and therapeutic physical activity. You will become aware of the team concept for the delivery of services to special populations. You will learn how to adapt traditional exercise forms, assessment techniques and training protocols to meet the needs of persons with physical and sensory impairments as well as chronic disease. The Specialization in Clinical Exercise Physiology provides the knowledge and practical skills of the Major program plus exposure to additional course work needed to pursue a career as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist. The curriculum focuses on understanding the pathology of common physical disabilities, medical intervention techniques, safe and effective diagnostic assessment procedures and physical activity programming for individuals requiring special attention. Students become familiar with the benefits of physical activity and exercise programming as they apply to individuals dealing with impairments and disabilities stemming from cardiovascular, pulmonary, sensorial, neurological, orthopaedic, oncologic and metabolic disorders.
