Bachelor of Science in Psychology

  • Objectives While an undergraduate degree in Psychology does not admit a graduate directly to the profession (a PhD or Doctorate in Psychology will be required to become a licensed psychologist in Quebec), an education in the field provides students with a comprehensive background in psychology and often serves as a springboard to further study in a wide variety of fields.

  • Course description All students majoring in Psychology must complete the 33 credit core curriculum. The number of additional Psychology courses required to complete your degree depends on whether you are in the Major, Specialization or Honours stream.

    Core Program
    : 33 credits

        * 15 required credits in psychology, including Strategies of Inquiry in Psychology, Statistical Analysis, Modern Psychology in Historical Perspective, Fundamentals of Behavioural Neurobiology.
        * 18 elective credits in psychology: nine credits from Fundamentals of Abnormal, Developmental and Social Psychology and Theories of Personality; nine credits from Motivation, Learning, Sensation and Perception, and Cognition.

    Honours in Psychology
    : 66 credits

    The requirements for psychology courses in this program are the same as those in the BA Honours in Psychology program. The difference between the two programs is that, of the 24 elective credits in other departments (6 of which must be General Education credits*), the BSc program requires that 15 be science credits.

    Specialization in Psychology: 60 credits

    The requirements for psychology courses in this program are the same as those in the BA Specialization in Psychology program. The difference between the two programs is that, of the 24 elective credits in other departments (6 of which must be General Education credits*), the BSc program requires that 15 be science credits.

    Major in Psychology
    : 42 credits

        * 33 Core Program
        * 9 elective credits at the intermediate or advanced level in Psychology
        * 48 elective credits, 24 of which must be in departments other than Psychology (12 of which must be General Education credits, if not adding a second major or minor*); the elective credits may be used for a Major or Minor in another discipline

    Minor in Psychology
    : 24 credits

    Admission to the Minor in Psychology is not available for newly admitted students. For students admitted to an alternate program at Concordia; information regarding entry to the Minor at a later date may be obtained at the following website: http://psychology.concordia.ca/Ugrads/Minor.html

        * 6 required credits in Introductory Psychology
        * 6 required credits in Strategies of Inquiry in Psychology and Statistical Analysis
        * 12 elective credits in Psychology at the 300-level, selected in consultation with a Psychology program advisor

    Note: students who are exempted from Introductory Psychology will replace the 6 credits with a 300-level Psychology course.

    *As part of your elective credits taken from other departments, and depending on your specific program of study, six to twelve general education credits are required in order to satisfy your degree requirements.
