ObjectivesBesides language courses, ranging from beginner to advanced levels, the Department offers five areas of study -culture, linguistics, literature, translation, and pedagogy (teaching and learning)- in which students explore various aspects of francophonie in depth. Through French studies, students acquire not only practical language skills but also learn to read accurately and critically, and to engage meaningfully with other world views. Carleton programs are geared to the interests and needs of both English-speaking and French-speaking students. In fact, our programs provide students from both language groups with the benefit of sharing cultures.
