Advanced Police Studies Ontario College Graduate Certificate
ObjectivesThis two semester program is designed to develop a student's capabilities as a police officer. Students will refine their abilities to analyze situations and to make appropriate decisions in complex situations. Through use of small group classes, simulations and community exercises, students will gain experience in dealing with social problems within an ever-changing diverse community. This program gives graduates specialized knowledge and advanced skills preparing them to work as police officers.
Practical experienceA five week block placement with a local police service and/or a university police service is included in each semester.

COMM8020 Advanced Professional Communication
Description: Being an effective communicator is essential for a professional at the scene of an event, during public presentations including court and by the submission of professional reports and documentation. In this course students will develop the skills necessary for conflict management and diffusion of hostility which will be practiced in Situation Management and Effective Decision Making. They will also have the opportunity to practice their verbal skills necessary for court room presentation, public speaking and written skills necessary for appropriate notebook-taking, general duty reports and crown briefs.

FIT8000 Lifestyle and Fitness Management for Police Officers I
Description: This course will expend on the student’s current knowledge of the concepts of wellness and provides practical strategies for developing a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on fitness. Students are required to participate in group fitness training sessions in order to increase and/or maintain an overall physical fitness level to prepare the student to meet the physical fitness requirements for the course.
Through lectures, practical application and self-evaluation the student will address self responsibility, physical fitness, nutrition, stress management and additional occupational hazards. Students will develop strategies designed to meet their fitness and wellness goals

LAW8010 Situation Management and Effective Decision Making
Description: Students will evaluate the impact that procedures, legislation and social issues have upon decisions that need to be made under pressure. Alternative methods of managing a situation including conflict management and diffusion of hostility will be practised. The impact that decisions can have on an individual and the community will be examined. Through the use of small group exercises, problem-based learning and simulations, students will explore a variety of situations that they can be expected to experience and will examine alternative methods and appropriate responses.

LAW8050 Investigative Case Management
Description: This course is taught entirely in a computer lab. Students will learn advanced techniques for managing complex investigations through the use of a software Case Management system. Topics include investigator/investigation management, evidence cataloguing (document, audio, video), entity tracking (people, cars, boats, planes, bank accounts), investigation timeline and charting, and preparing the case for the crown or legal counsel.

PLCE8000 Advanced Police Studies Practicum I
Description: The five week block placement at a local police service and/or university police service exposes the student to all aspects of routine police/peace officer life and duties. Students will be expected to work shifts, weekends and holidays if required. During the practicum, students will be required to participate in on-line guided discussions related to their practicum experience, problems they encounter and to describe to fellow students how they are applying the capabilities developed in the program.

Level Two
FIT8010 Lifestyle and Fitness Management for Police Officers II
Description: This course will build upon the both the fitness level achieved in the prerequisite and the lifestyle goal of the individual. This course will focus on increasing or maintaining ones practical skills in performing the Bona Fide Occupational Requirements for Policing (PREP Testing), as well as the Peel Regional Police Fitness Standards used upon hiring. Group fitness training sessions are designed to enhance the student’s proficiency on performing this type of testing. As well students are encouraged to maintain daily Wellenss journal, to enhance their self-evaluation skills in Total Fitness and its relationship to our Wellness model

LAW8020 Advanced Situation Management and Effective Decision Making
Description: Building upon capabilities developed in Situation Management and Decision Making, the student will be exposed to further situations that they can be expected to deal with as professionals. The effects that legislation, social issues, policing and procedures have upon decisions will be evaluated. Through the use of group exercises, problem-based learning and simulations, students will enhance their ability to evaluate responses and to deal with situations and make appropriate decisions.

LAW8030 Applied Social Issues
Description: This course will build upon capabilities developed in Advanced Social Issues. Students will select an area of concentration and spend time with a community agency. They will work with individuals experiencing social problems and analyze methods they have used to cope. They will be expected to make a presentation to their classmates sharing their experiences.

PLCE8010 Independent Police Service Project
Description: Utilizing a need identified and approved by a specific Police Service/University Police, the student will be required to complete a project which will be of benefit to the police service/university. A professional quality written submission and oral presentation will be required for successful completion of this course.

PLCE8020 Advanced Police Studies Practicum II
Description: In addition to Advanced Police Studies Practicum I students will again experience a five week block placement with a police service/university police service. As with the earlier practicum, students will be required to take part in on-line guided discussions relating to their practicum experience, problems they encounter and to describe to fellow students how they are applying the capabilities developed in the program.
