Course descriptionFASD 260: Overview of FASD (10 weeks)
Introductory course covering FASD’s effects and impact on social, educational, criminal, financial and health care systems. Covers prevention/intervention strategies, neurobehavioural differences, and more.
FASD 300: Support Strategies (10 weeks)
Focuses on developing effective strategies for those exhibiting FASD-related behaviour. Includes study of CNC’s Focus class (for FASD-affected adults) and the BC government's strategic plan for FASD.
FASD 305: Brain and Behaviour
A foundation course on the neurological effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol. Covers relevant neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and biopsychology.
FASD 310: Cultural Perspectives in FASD
Explores FASD from a cultural perspective, with a focus on Canadian Aboriginal cultures. FASD is viewed as a disorder that, while it affects all cultures, provides an emergent opportunity for the Aboriginal peoples of Canada to create a unique and effective response.
FASD 315: Advanced Topics in FASD
Addresses the unique considerations of policies and ethics within the various systems impacted by FASD.
FASD 320: Human Development
Explores physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development throughout the lifespan, creating a framework for understanding FASD’s developmental delays. This is fundamental to subsequent courses on FASD neuropathology and neuropsychology.
FASD 325: FASD and Developmental Disabilities
Explores developmental disabilities (including those affecting motor, cognitive, speech and sensory systems) and learning disabilities.
FASD 330: Addictions
Explores addiction and recovery from the perspective of the individual and society. Covers the physiological effects of alcohol, the neurobiology of alcohol addiction, patterns of abuse, and more.
FASD 335: FASD Prevention
Covers three levels of prevention of FASD and alcohol addiction. Also covers principles of public health and public health policy, and examines existing prevention programs.
FASD 399: Practicum
A supervised practicum supplemented by a weekly online seminar. In consultation with instructors and practicum supervisors, students will establish specific practicum goals within their targeted discipline.
