Course descriptionAdult Basic Education includes six levels of study ranging from basic literacy to course work at the Grade twelve level. Courses in this program enable participants to learn or relearn skills needed to meet employment, personal or educational goals. Participants often enroll in the program as a first step to entering a certificate or diploma program. Students may take ABE courses on afull-time or part-time basis. Due to the range of courses available the course offerings will vary at each program location (community learning centres and campuses). Students may take ABE courses on a full-time or part-time basis.
Admission Requirements
Applicants wishing to apply to this program must be at least seventeen [17] years of age and out of school for at least one year. They may also be required to:
* complete an entrance placement test to assess English and Mathematics skills. This is not a pass or fail test;
* participate in an interview with Nunavut Arctic College staff
Record of Achievement
Credits earned in this program are transferable to other Arctic College programs. Please check with each campus registrar for transferability.
Employment Opportunities:
This program is designed to enhance an individual's academic skills. While program completion does not ensure employment, graduates do have more options and the program enhances employment in entry level positions.
Courses in this program
080-102 English 120
English 120 is for students who are able to understand and use spoken English. Students will also demonstrate mastery of reading readiness skills and be able to write simple stories and messages based on personal experiences. English 120 uses a holistic approach. It develops reading, listening, viewing, speaking and writing skills based on the learners' needs and interests.
080-103 English130
English 130 is designed for students who can read, write, speak and understand basic English but who may lack skills and confidence. English 130 uses an integrated approach to actively involve students in all processes of language. Students will develop the ability to share personal experiences and responses to literature in both oral and written forms. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to write a well-organized paragraph which has been taken through numerous drafts to final copy.
080-104 English 140
English 140 is for students who have mastered the basic skills identified in English 130. The course uses an integrated approach and is designed to increase competence in all areas of language reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing. The students will develop skills in writing narrative, descriptive and expository multi-paragraph compositions as well as business correspondence and research assignments. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to write and self-edit a well-constructed expository essay with a minimum of structural, grammatical and spelling errors.

English 150 is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to succeed in college diploma programs. The course uses an integrated approach to develop skills in critical reading, literacy analysis, expository
080-106 English 160
This course is an academic literature course designed for those students wishing university entrance. The course requires a concentrated study of the various forms of literature. Two novels, two plays, and a variety of short stories, essays and poems are studied.
080-111 Math 110
This course is designed for learners with limited prior knowledge of basic math concepts. The course content includes whole numbers and one-step problem solving. The focus is on developing concrete and functional terms familiar to the student's environment to build the concepts of mathematical logic.
080-112 Math 120
This course is designed to introduce the learner to basic mathematics. It is designed for students with prior knowledge of arithmetic concepts. The course includes the following areas of study: whole numbers, decimals, fractions, ratios and proportions and percentages.
080-113 Math 130
This course is designed to build on the learner's knowledge of basic mathematics. It is a continuation of Mathematics 120 and covers metric measurements, algebra, geometry, graphs and introductory statistics.
080-114 Math 140
This course is designed to build the learner's knowledge of mathematics at the intermediate level. It is a continuation of Mathematics 130 and covers: polynomials, exponents, factoring and trigonometry.
080-115 Math 150
This course is designed to build the student's knowledge of mathematics at the advanced level. It is a continuation of Mathematics 140 and leads into 160 level (grade 12) Mathematics 30. The course includes: solving and graphing solutions of linear and second-degree expressions, radicals and trigonometry.
080-116 Math 160
This course extends algebraic and graphing skills and analysis of polynomials and quadratic functions, including the conic sections: circle, ellipse, parabola, and hyperbola. Trigonometry is developed to solve oblique triangles and express circular measure and periodic functions. Other topics include statistics and probability, logarithmic and exponential functions and permutations and combinations.

Science Literacy is a multi-level, learner-centered science literacy program which aims to address the needs of northern students. The course is intended for students working at the 110, 120 and 130 levels of ABE at Nunavut Arctic College.

Pre-trades Science is designed specifically for learners who intend to enter a Nunavut Arctic College trades program or an apprenticeship program. The course will provide background knowledge essential for the trades. Learners will receive credit for Science 130 on completion of this course.

This college preparation science course is intended to prepare students for entry into those Nunavut Arctic College courses requiring a background in science. The course is an integrated program of studies helping students to understand basic scientific principles drawn from chemistry, physics, biology and environmental science.

Aboriginal Language 110 is an introductory literacy course for native speakers of Inuktitut who wish to become functionally literate in the syllabic of the Inuit Cultural Institute Standard Orthography.
080-152 Aboriginal Language 120
Aboriginal Language 120 is the second level literacy course for native speakers of Inuktitut who wish to become functionally literate in the syllabic of the Inuit Cultural Institute Standard Orthography.
080-153 Aboriginal Language 130
Aboriginal Language 130 is an intermediate course for native speakers of Inuktitut who wish to improve their basic reading and writing skills in Inuktitut and gain an understanding of the basic structure of their language.
080-154 Aboriginal Language 140
Aboriginal Language 140 is an advanced course for native speakers of Inuktitut. This course will proceed with the study of more advanced writing exercises and texts. Format and vocabulary of Inuktitut business writing will also be included.
080-161 Aboriginal Language 115
Aboriginal Language 115 is an introduction to the systematic study of human language in general and Inuktitut in particular. This course is for second-language learners.
080-162 Aboriginal Language 125
Aboriginal Language 125 is a continuation of the systematic study of human language in general and Inuktitut in particular, with particular reference to dialectal differences. The course also contains an introduction to the syllabic orthography. This course is for second-language learners.
080-163 Aboriginal Language 135
Aboriginal Language 135 is a semi-intensive grammar-based oral course concentrating on spoken Inuktitut, but with some written material as stimulus to oral activities. This course is for second-language learners.
