Addictions & Mental Health Ontario College Graduate Certificate
ObjectivesThe program, delivered by experienced/skilled practitioners from the field, provides graduates of social services, human services and social science programs, and practicing counsellors with the specific skill set to work with client populations affected by addictions/mental health related problems. Students are trained to work in addiction/mental health-specific settings and the broad spectrum of social or health service agencies where addictions/mental health-related issues likely arise. For practitioners already in private practice, this certificate provides a specific knowledge and skill set applicable to clients affected by addictive/mental health behaviour. Students develop an understanding of the particular needs of "special populations" such as the elderly and youth, the dually diagnosed, minority groups and women. In addition, this graduate certificate program provides training in current counselling practices. In this regard, training is provided in brief therapies, relapse prevention, working with families and the treatment of compulsive gambling.
Practical experienceThe student's classroom learning is complemented with 490 hours of field experience, supervised by qualified, professional practitioners.
